OK, one more clue, the name of the canyon where the photo was taken is the same name as a famous unpaved road in the same state with lots of switchbacks.

Any more, and I'll just have to tell you.

Moki Canyon it is. The thing is, we paddled our kayaks there, and the closest place you can put in is Halls Crossing marina, and that made it a 13.5 mile round trip. Tuff on old, fat people in the summer time.

That was a compliment to your wife. Should be taken as such.

Are you one of those men who like to take their women to a deserted beach to "watch the submarine races."

Speaking of which (submarines) I had to post this. Don't know if it fits within "the rules," but Massey is likewise, a history buff, so he won't mind......will you, Dave?

It is a rare photo, and was discovered in a relative's old army kit.

Clues:

Think Devil's Brigade, a popular frozen/cooked dessert, and sushi!

That's a tuff one, Fly at Night. I've done several searches and can only find info on the Devil's Brigade, but nothing that would link them to that picture.

Would that be in the Aleutian Islands in 1942

That is a picture taken on Attu Island in the Aleutian island chain after the US recaptured the island. They are digging up a secret Japanese weapon. It was a machine used to produce gigantic poisoned California rolls which were going be dropped on the Allied troops when they attacked the island . Fortunately the project was not yet completed when the attack took place.

Ding! Ding! Ding! re: the Aleutians. The photo is not dated, unfortuntely, but it was during the earlier stages of WW2.

Nice try, Ken, but you get the horn for the rest. (BTW, don't you think a Dynamite Roll would be better?)

The Devil's Brigade in this context was a joint US/Canadian effort that was mustered to drive out the Japanese. My relative was part of the Canadian contingent. When the Brigade reached this island - I'm not sure which one - the Japanese had already fled, but destroyed this submarine beforehand. I guess it was such a hasty departure that they did not have time to relaunch it.

Thought some of you would find this interesting. We found some other photos, including a pin-up girl which looks like a cross between Gypsy Rose Lee and the Bride of Frankenstein. Some of the relations think it's our great aunt. (She's wearing shiny silver shoes too).
