Here's another from the Sawtooth. West of Stanley is a valley with some history going back to an early conservationist who preserved this area. His name was "Big John" and the area is named after him but sounds somewhat more romantic. You drive down the river a few miles and there is a private campground with a cabin built by this guy. There is also a hot spring fed swimming pool, a horse livery, and hot springs a short distance away in the river. There is also a forest service campground at the end of the road. What is the name of this area?

Grandjean it is!. There are also some cabins along with the campground which is called Sawtooth Lodge. There is water and electricity at the campground, but the electricity is from a generator and there is not enough juice to run your AC. If you are looking for an off the beaten track spot not to far from Boise this is it.

You are on Main Street in Sheridan, Wyoming.
You are driving North.
The pictures were taken on May 1, 2011 at 8:35 AM MDST (If Best Out West's clock is correct)

Hey Lumatic. I've passed this stump and the tree that sat atop the stump countless times. I went to College in the Adirondacks. I remember reading many years ago that it was the largest American Elm in the country. Can't speak to the accuracy of that statement but it was a "BIG TREE". The Inn adjacent it is was aptly called the Elm Tree Inn. Beautiful country up there but can get awfully buggy in the summer.

Sounds like all correct to me for post 720! The date on Heather's picture is misleading. It was a quiet MONDAY morning June the 20th early enough for lots of parking. We had overnighted there.

The tree and stump are now gone. But I think the Elm Tree Inn is still there. Elm Tree Inn was the haunt of bobsledders because the Mt. Van Hovenburg track was just up the hill.

Last I heard you could still take a tourist version of the bob run which starts a little lower on the track and uses 1930 vintage bobsleds.

No one can truly say they are an outdoors man until they have survived Adirondack blackflies.

OK, Here is a picture with proof I was there.

The bottom picture is taken from my rear view camera, you will note the two distinctive peaks in the background, that should help.

The top picture is me receiving a warning for driving too slowly.

Where did this incident occur.

It is a fictional town in Colorado
It is a real area in Colorado
It is a reproduction western town located in the real town most people believe the fictional town is based on.
