I noticed your mention of Hanalei as one of a few residences. I was renting a beach house in Hanalei just before Thanksgiving in 1982. That was one of my life's great adventures. When we figured out that Hurricane Iwa was bearing done on us, it was too late to get to the shelter in Kilauea, so we ended up holing up in the Princeville Police substation. Coincidentally the ham who was supposed to man the emergency radio station could not get there. When they found out I was ham, I ended up being the only communications with the north end of the Island, when the police radio failed. What a fantastic location to view a hurricane. The eye went right over us.

Ken
Great story Ken, I'm sure you services were appreciated too. There is now a community radio station not far from the police station. Put in after the hurricane to cover that need. Good eclectic programming too.KKCR.

You are correct, my phone reminds me that this beautiful lookout is near Westport Ca. I love having a functional memory, in my phone :-)

Cheers Richard

Ps it's great having the S C along for the ride. Thanks

To get this over with and move on to the next challenge here are the final definitive details. There are 2 roads designated US route 89. My atlas show both as US 89, but the southern 89 is in Arizona from Page to Jacob Lake. It is also known as US 89A. I don't believe you can see Vermillion Cliffs from the northern Utah 89 as the cliffs face south, but could be wrong. Topos show Vermillion Cliffs entirely in AZ , but I could be wrong. The original photo was taken on 89 a few miles west of Marble Canyon south of the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. 89 is just a couple of miles from the Colorado at this point. The other photos were taken at Cliff Dwellers, AZ also on 89 a few miles west of Marble Canyon. The photo of Vermillion Cliffs in the distance was taken half way up the mesa on the way up to Jacob Lake on 89(A?) which is on the way to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (which gives me an idea for another challenge), the wonder of the world mentioned in my post. The Colorado River connects Lake Powell and Lake Mead which are the 2 bodies of water mentioned in my post.

You are correct. You can only see the Vermillion Cliffs from Highway 89A. Both the cliffs, and 89A at that point, are in Arizona. Highway 89A was in fact the original 89. The new 89, which runs from Kanab, Utah to Page, Arizona, was so-designated in 1960 to service the building of Glen Canyon Dam, which was finished in 1966.

Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, by the way, lies entirely in Arizona; its northern boundary is the AZ-UT state line. From Highway 89A west of Marble Canyon (which skirts the southern boundary of the Monument), elevations are around 3000 feet; the height of the cliffs in view--in the Monument, to the north--reach over 6000 feet.

Agreed they are not IN the National Monument, which is relatively new, and even new since I was driving in the area, but there are Vermillion Cliffs on the North side of US Hwy 89 in Utah, and to prove it I had to go to topo maps to get a screen shot of the name. I also distinctly remember seeing a road sign on that trip pointing out the Vermillion Cliffs to the north of the highway as we were driving West to Kanab.

We are both right and wrong. Who'd a thunk there are 2 Vermillion Cliffs north of the 2 US 89 routes.

Thanks Youngpeck for the history on how 89 became 89A and how the new 89 was designated.

Hint: Can't drive your Airstream here, you have to take alternative transport to get near it.

I did get the general area right.

Bingo!
It sets at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Access to the island is by ferry from Southport or by private boat. No cars or trucks are allowed, except emergency and occasionally for construction. Residents and visitors travel on the island by golf cart or bicycle.

I've seen several Airstreams here. You can park nearby and walk right up to these guys, many people do every day. They are not contained/restrained in any way. The gators are wild, can come and go as they please.

Where is it?
"Alligators are everywhere in Florida – official estimates suggest there may be more than 1.25 million of them in Florida’s waters."

This is like showing a picture of a Longhorn in Texas and asking where it is.
