I should explain for those outside the region. Yakima and surrounding area has a wine industry that has exploded the last decade and by many accounts is expected in the next 10 years to surpass any wine producing area in north america, which is great for the economy here.

While it definately has it's downsides having spent the last 30 years or so as a very poor region with large migrant populations of farm workers etc, it has over 300 days of sunshine a year, is close to Portland, Seattle, Spokane etc, so not a bad place to settle down. You can literally drive 15 minutes west and be in fully tree'd mountains and 15 minutes east and be in the middle of the desert.

Anyway, since the early 70's a local developer has had this sign on the side of the highway coming into town. Despite many attempts at city slogans etc over the years, it has always stuck, at times at the dismay of the city itself.

Thumbs down snow is a four letter word..

Having lived in Alaska for just over 22 years, I know what cold is.
I've put chains on at 60* F. BELOW ZERO and at 50* F. ABOVE ZERO.
The latter because of mud. I used to race snowmobiles up north and have been over 100 MPH at 60* below back in 1972 during the "Midnight Sun 600" race.
BUT now, at 70 years young, enough is enough.
Take this stuff back up there where it belongs,
NORTH OF THE BORDER>.... The Polar Bears need the cold to keep the ice from melting.

By the way, do you know how to catch a Polar Bear?

Well, it is like this....
Go out on the ice, cut a hole about 36" in diameter. Oh Oh , you for got the canned peas. Go back and get a # 303 tin of canned peas. go back onto the ice and cut the hole out again.
Now sprinkle the peas around the hole. Gee wiss, OPEN the Can First.
Now back off away from the hole about 200 yards.
When the Polar Bear gets right up near the hole to take a pea, kick him in the

Just a BIT? Well at least it is a good conversation starter for people coming through town. BTW only about an inch or so new today, so the rest of the storm must have just missed us. Anyone get a lot last night?

Down here in Oregon, at the foot of Mt Hood, we have over two feet of snow on the ground. The snow has been pushed up to four foot high along the roadside at the mailbox, and more is on the way. The biggest challenges have been keeping the snow thrower running and resisting the urges to drag the Airstream to a warmer place. The Airstream has been winterized and is plugged into power from the shop. The tow vehicle is parked during the snow, even though it is four-wheel drive, as I just canít bring myself to spend $600.00 for studded snow tires for just one season. We have studded tires all around on two other vehicles, and we donít need the van on a daily basis.
Our plans are to rent out the house, and head south in March or April. We are planning to full time it for a couple of years or so, and see if it works out. The wifeís parents were full timers for over 20 years, and followed rallies and caravans all over North America and the world, and we plan to use them as a model.

The worst snow we ever saw was when we lived in 'the palm springs of Washington'! We had a few feet of snow with drifts to the roofline! Had to dig out a channel to the yard so the dog could go out. Then we sat around all day listening to the radio (power was out) as people called in with their winter misfortunes. My favorite was the guy who called in to say he saw his neighbor take a pot of boiling water out to pour on their car windows to clear the ice, and instead the window broke. The guy was watching it happen while he was on the phone with the DJ, so it was a play by play - hilareous! It was like a radio show, we were shouting at the radio 'no, don't do it!'! Before that storm was over we were even running out of groceries in the stores because Snoqualmie Pass had been closed for so long the trucks couldn't get over to bring supplies. That was some crazy storm!

Couple more inches here overnight and it's still snowing! I'd say it's easily the worst we've seen in the ten years we've lived here.
