photo software

Hopefully someone can make some recommendations to me. I am looking for some SIMPLE software as well as being reasonable priced for the computer that I can put descriptions (writing) on the photo and attach a description (written paragraph) that can be accessed later to remember facts about the photo. This doesn't have to be fancy but would like to remember the photos.

For example: the picture below was taken at Greenbo Lake in KY during the summer of 2008. I would like to be able to write "Greenbo Lake 2008" or something like this in the picture.
Any recommendations?

Decent free software of this kind is Irfanview.

To purchase, you might consider Photoshop Elements. The current issue is Ver. 8, which generally runs around 80 bucks. However, you can purchase new-in-box earlier versions on Ebay for much less.

I wouldn't recommend Photoshop CS, which is far, far more expensive, but the standard for professional photographers.

It's a built-in feature of iPhoto...

...and perhaps other applications as well. iPhoto is free with all Apple computers so there is no need to purchase another piece of software for this task.

Google's Picasa is free and pretty easy to use. The nice thing about the free stuff is that if you don't like it, you can just uninstall it and move on.

Picasa 3: Free download from Google

hi crispy...

here's 2 days worth of posts on this issue from 2 years ago.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f138...elp-37394.html

many of the same cheap or free solutions mentioned are STILL available.

along with the online editing stuff from MS, G, Y now widely used.

the REAL key is to pic an app and THEN LEARN 2 use the features and menus.

familiarity with how any given app WORKS...

is one of the primary reasons folks stick with Pchop or ACDC or some other package and the annual upgrades.

web search "add text to photos" and most of the common stuff (free, cheap or otherwise) will be revealed.

cheers

For the price Picasa is a great deal (it's free) and it does a good job.

yeah 'hoot...

that's because u can't.

iP is NOT about editing, it's a user simple ORGANIZING FILING SORTING TOOL primarily.

so one can ad text to the NAME of a pic or a whole BATCH of photos...

but ON the pic, no... without plug in type extensions are other tiny apps.

on the mac side pCHOP elements is an inexpensive app for adding LAYERS of info over the original pic.

there are a couple of 20-30$ shareware apps and free apps that will do this in the mac world too...

but then one want quickly wants to add an ARROW or CIRCLE or merge or other simple photo tweak...

and the cheap/free apps then come up SHORT...

i'm NOT a huge fan of ado-beeeee, but pchop elements is a pretty good app for 99.9% of the camera crowd.

herez a couple of free like tools...

http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/

http://seashore.sourceforge.net/index.php
______________

IF one is willing to convert their pic files to BITMAP there are other free/cheap simple tools too.

ALSO the photo file can be loaded into MS word (or the others) as a word ART file, then text overlayed, then shipped back to iP...

work arounds abound.

cheers

It's pretty much the standard story: Free stuff is great, but comes with limited options, too; software that you pay for does (or at least should) have more options, though often accompanied by a learning curve as well. Always spend some time reading reviews of software before you buy anything.

Try this

SilverHoot
Try this with iphoto. There other ways to add text just need to play around with what works best for you.

Long explanation, but it works!

1) Have 'FINDER' open in Task Bar
2) Put photo from 'iPhoto' or similar program onto the Desktop
3) Double Click photo
4) 'PREVIEW' should now be at the top of your Mac

If you have not done so, go to VIEW, CUSTOMIZE TOOLBAR, and drag 'Annotate' button to your Taskbar

5) Use the Annotate 'button' and arrow down until you see 'Note', click or highlight
6) Drag, (curser turns to a cross mark) a box that will have the word 'text' in it (highlighted in bright green)
7) Tools, Show Font, select your font (This is a small screen, I sometimes leave it open & move it out of my way)
8) Tools, Color, use the crayons feature, select color or black or white (White is perfect for most pictures)
9) Type you notation
9) After completing, the box can be positioned anywhere on the photo

It depends upon the meaning of "on"..

I believe the context of the query is about naming photos and providing descriptive info. Certainly, iPhoto can do that.

Your interpretation of "on" as a layer is another point of view. But, even that can be done in iPhoto using the Book feature. It might seem a bit complicated at first but it's only a few key clicks and produces a nice result. The technique is described here:

Adding Text to Images in iPhoto 7

Just curious crispboy, what kind of computer do you have? It can impact some of your choices. Do you use a Mac and have iPhoto? If not, the discussions about its capabilities are sort of moot.

A well respected free one that 2air mentioned is GIMP (GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program), and you can get it for lots of platforms.

I use Photoshop CS, but that's a lot of expensive overkill for what you want.

possibly but reread the o.p.

the suggested need is writing "on" the photo and later "in" the photo.

along with 'attaching a descriptive paragraph'...

attaching text/description TO photos is easy on mac, even without iP...

but the 'book' feature really just attaches the SAME text to EVERY pic.

it's a cute user thing, like digital scrapbooking,

but to put unique words ON or IN or OVER EACH of 10 images,

a BOOK would need to be made for each picture....10 books.

as written earlier, work arounds abound...

but the book feature isn't a quick, simple or easy way to ADD TEXT to a group of photos...

besides...47 to 3 i'll wager crispy is using a peeeceeee.

cheers

I bought a "Bamboo Fun" for about $90 from Dell. It came with a bonus Photoshop Elements, which is normally about that price alone. Anyway, the Bamboo tablet allows you to actually write in your own handwriting on the pictures with a stylus (rather than using a cumbersome mouse). It's pretty cool. Photoshop Elements is pretty easy to use, and you can type words on as AZFlycaster did above.

Wow you folks have a lot of great info - Thanks.

I think I may look into the Photoshop Elements and Plus. I also need to start transferring some video to dvd's.

I visited the website and I think I can download a trial version and take it for a test run.

I'm still using iPhoto '08, but in the lower left corner, in the Information panel, you can type your description. It's far more than a "ORGANIZING FILING SORTING TOOL".

Honestly 2air, it's impossible to know for sure what your actually talking about with all the abbreviations and pet names you use. So forgive me if I misunderstood what your trying to say.

My point is that a lot of people use iPhoto for more than importing photos, dropping them into folders and categorizing them (organization). It is a great photo editing application what should give most people everything they need. If they have a Mac, give it a try before you spend $100 or $600, or invest time in something else that may be less capable.
