Horray for Hollywood!

"Night at the Museum - Battle of the Smithsonian" was filmed here. Many of the scenes involved a mock-up of the National Air and Space Museum in DC.

All I can say - when the set decorators walked through our vintage hangar with a 175M budget - it was a good day for a non-profit organization. They went through our collection and said "Well, take this....and this....and this..."

What they couldn't rent from us, they had built as replicas, or scavenged from the various aircraft boneyards in Arizona. The Mercury 7 Friendship was one of those replicas. When the film wrapped up, the company donated many of the props back to our vintage airplane association, including the Friendship.

I subsequently used the Friendship as a prop for a special-event. It is made out of foam and is indeed "light and airy." So, when the tailgate of my old truck sprung open as I was cruising down the highway, the Friendshp naturally flew out and landed top-side up right in the middle of the highway. The Honda Civic behind me narrowly missed hitting it. Can you imagine how he would explain that to his insurance agent?

A couple of motorists stopped and helped me lift the Friendship back into my truck...and I proceeded merrily along to the event.

Anyway, if you ever see the film, you will see the same Friendship hanging from the ceiling during the chase scene where the Ben Stiller character is flying the Wright Flyer through the museum. Matter of fact, like the Honda Civic, he almost hits it. Is that art imitating life.....or life imitating art?

Well, I don't know if you'll win the photo contest, but that's the best story I've heard in a while. Awesome!

Thanks for sharing! I knew there was an interesting story there! Not only is it light & airy, both figuratively, & literally ( considering it was made of styrofoam).. There are always lots of great photos in each contest, but this is really my favorite! Thanks for sharing!

Regards, Terry

Honourable Contest Master, can we submit more than once? I've thought of something else.

Keep 'em coming! These are great stress relievers. Funny stuff. There's still time to show your light side and tickle our funny bones.

Here's one from an e-mail I received today.

Wind Chimes

Our Airstream wind chimes are always placed on the awning (the real reason why ... because I have a habit of forgetting the awning arm is extended and I keep hitting my bald head on the awning arm). This photo is from the weekend of November 16th camping at Limestone Lake, TX.

Been there, done that......, too many times! Funny, but we carry a set of wind chimes with us also, however it isn't topped by an airstream!

I am 6'3". I don't have too much problem with the awning arm but every spring I forget to duck going out the door. After about a dozen contacts I can usually remember.

(I've gone ahead and posted another entry - hope that's okay! If not, disregard one, please, contest master.)
