Thanks Steph. I don't know what I was thinking but I can barely stay out of the Airstream for more than a couple of hours! It's starting to feel just like home. I spent two days at a local campground after picking it up and then 4 days at the Metro Detroit shakedown rally directly from there, Next week-end we go to the Tin Can Tourists rally and I think we have gotten pretty well acclimated to it. Although we did go out and practise which way to zig and zag coming out of the shower yesterday. LOL

took the Caravel to Coyote Buttes last week. Got lucky in the BLM drawing and got a pass into North Coyote Buttes. Here's just a peek at the Wave. I'll put many more photos on the Mind's Eye site later.

Wow! The wave gets my vote. That is some of the most spectacular eolian dune cross-bedding I have seen.

The Wave is incredible! This photo reminds me of a Van Gogh painting with the motion of the rock and the sky. Beautiful I didn't understand about the drawing. . .you have to take chances to get into this area? ~G

passes to the Wave

there are 6 or so passes available 4 months in advance on the Web for each day. The other 10 passes are available in a drawing that is done every day on the day prior to when the pass is valid. You have to be at the BLM "contact office" at the Paria River Canyon location at 9 A.M. to be eligible, and sign up.

here's a look at another formation in the immediate area of the Wave. This was taken with the 17-40 mm lens on an EOS 20D. I needed about another 10% wider angle, so I guess the EOS 5D is mandatory. The only wider lens that is available (and not an EFS piece of you know what) is the 15 mm, which is just a little pricey...

Buzzy4, where can I find out more about cross-bedding? I'm in a significant discussion regarding the possibility/impossibility for wind-blown sand to create the interfaces where the grain is cut linearly and the new grain direction is off at some angle without any fairing of the grain with the linear cut. I maintain that that is an impossible piece of wind physics. Drawings later, if required.

Hey, was that a great Nova program tonight about the potholes region of Washington?

I have hiked Havasu Falls a couple of times. One of the best trips I've taken except for the long steep walk out. First time I thought I was gonna die. The place is absolutely gorgeous!! I should go back but this body isn't the same one as before. Even went trout fishing below Beaver Falls which was also a long hike further down Havasu Canyon.

Zeppelinium

This USGS publication is a good place to start in understanding the principles of cross-bed stratification. Unfortunately it doesn't have any diagrams which would further help to demonstrate the different patterns of x-bedding.

http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/seds/relations.html

This site has photos and diagrams which may further help to explain.

http://www.earthscienceworld.org/ima...=Cross-Bedding

It is important to understand the mechanics of cross-stratification and then to visualize in 3 dimensions in order to explain all the possibilities of patterns that may be found in an outcrop.

I hope this helps.

Ed
