June 2014 Photo Contest

Well, after some head scratching to come up with a theme, I came up with something -hope it will work. How about a picture when you first got your Airstream- maybe your first camping trip, maybe when you got her home for the first time- you know, the one that says, "WOW, look at that- and she's mine/ours!" For us, we sealed the deal by phone on our 2006 Classic 31 in January 2011. We live in Florida, but our prize resided in the mountains of Pennsylvania near the NY border. It just would not stop snowing that year in those mountains. The PO was fine with us waiting to come get her when the weather broke- she was under cover and snow banks blocked her exit anyway. So, we waited, and waited, and waited....finally the end of March, it looked like we had a break for us to get up there and make an escape. The nice lady that we bought her from allowed us to stay with her for a couple of days to get her ready and complete the paperwork and registration. We were nubies, but we knew enough to put new new tires on her, and when that was done, we headed South in snow flurries heralding the coming of the next storm. We tacked our way South staying in friend's and families yards and driveways- a good excuse for a visit. We stayed in one campground on the way down- Hunting Island, SC-- a great spot and worthy of another trip. When we finally arrived home, we took a deep breath and got a beverage to wind down. Here is our, "Wow, she is everything we have ever hoped for, and she is ours" photo. Our smiles say it all... so take a trip down memory lane ( for some you can choose your first Airstream or any you have had) and tell us your story!

When I went to pick up our first AS, the dealer would take a picture of you in front of your new toy. Sam couldn't make it, so I held up a photo of her (with a big fish) so she could be included. The first trip: the drive home.

I'm pretty sure I was thinking (as DW was taking this pic), "can you believe we have THIS thing?!?!" :-)

Our first "real" trip was to the Finger Lakes Region. After a 6 hour drive and set up in camp, we raised our antenna to catch the local news and there was a severe thunder storm warning in the area. OUR FIRST TRIP OUT!!

Called the front desk, got the procedures if we needed them and rode the storm out.

Next day, great hiking, warm breeze during the day, Daisy's first ice cream and a chilly night by the fire with our Tin Goat mascot.

Following morning, snow on the trailer, a cold walk at a vineyard with Daisy and a surprise gift left for the Tim Goat by some anonymous (and well-cheered campers). :-)

One heck of a first outing!

Yup - 2004 we traded in this for that, a shiny new (to us) 1999 34 Classic. We are now on our 3rd (no wait, 4th) Airstream. It is a sickness.

In 2005 we traded in this for that; a new, right-out-of-the-wrapper 2005 34 Classic with slide out. Our first camping trip was just up the road to Camp Cherry Log, owned by Bates RV, and our next trip was up to Jax Center for what was called "Homecoming".

We named our new AS Vickie, which was a standing family joke that in fact the new AS was my girlfriend, and we just named her Vickie. I decided to get a "vanity" tag for the AS one day, and applying for getting the tag at the tag office was interesting. ..

Me: I'd like a vanity tag for my trailer, and I want it to read "Vickie".

Clerk: I've never been asked for a vanity tag for a trailer.

Me: Oh, this trailer is special to me.

Clerk: Is your wife's name Vickie?

Me: No.

Clerk: Are you married?

Me: Yes.

Clerk: But your wife's name is not Vickie?

Me: Correct.

Clerk: Does your wife know that you are here?

Me: No.

You get the picture; that clerk is probably still telling her friends this story.

Passing Our Airstream On The Way Home

It was a long drive to the dealer to pick up our new Airstream. Things didn't go as planned and we left without the Airstream...but with the promise that it would be delivered to our home by the end of the day.

Kids were tired and they napped for most of the drive back. When we had about an hour left to go, they woke up hungry. We knew the Airstream was behind us but didn't know how far...we took a chance and stopped to eat.

Back on the road, as we started across Payne's Prairie, hubby spotted an Airstream ahead. This one was ours! It was very exciting to pass it on the way home. My oldest was in the backseat yelling, "Is that our Airstream?!"

Yikes! A trip to remember for sure. I remember one of our first trips to the Mts of NC- got to our land, all set up, sat down for a rest, and started to hear the dreaded sound of HAIL! No damage, just very frightening......love the Tin Goat AND thoughtful neighbors!

That is one nice looking Airstream there Brad!
The story on the vanity plate is a good one also.

Well done

You never forget your first trip, and the events leading up to it.

I had been quite sick and had been housebound for almost a year.

I know this sound strange, but when I started to feel a bit better, I had to get out and buy a new bed - and found one - surrounded by an Airstream trailer!

Here it is, still on the dealer's lot.....

Next thing I know, I'm on the road to recovery, literally and metaphorically!

The first trip was to the Cascade Mountains. The fog rolls in and out of the high country quickly.....

Then one morning, the fog had lifted. I also thought there was something symbolic about that.....

Am posting this photo because it is also a good memory. Sure had a lot of fun gussying up the FaN after purchase.....

Someday, when I'm laying on another bed - that bed old age and affirmity - I will remember all of this with great fondness, and pat myself on the back while thinking, you did that! Good on you, girl....... good on you.

FAN- that is a wonderful story- thank you for sharing- and FWIW, there seems to me that our Airstream has recuperative powers too! One day, I finally realized that the reason I was so eager to make those once a month camping trips in the Airstream is that it was the ONLY time I could totally relax! Now that we have both recently retired, we are not limited to one weekend a month, and can't wait to hit the road. Love the pics of the fog rolling in!
