July 2019 Photography Contest
The theme of this months contest is “Then and Now - Photos of Nostalgia, Beginnings and Change.” We are looking for your photos of your camping experience growing up, your first Airstream, or how camping has changed. This can be one or two photos but one picture must show your Airstream. Two photos, with one showing your vintage Airstream photo and the other your current Airstream, would be really intriguing. Airstream’s current redux of the Globetrotter and the Caravel sparked our interest in the Airstreams of the past and had us reminiscing about family camping as children and how camping has changed. Our own experience of buying our Airstream was started by seeing a derelict 1966 Shasta in the woods. We started imagining what it would be like to explore the country together in a travel trailer. We would love to see your stories in pictures! What photos do you have that make you smile and remember the good all days, or make you appreciate how you camp now compared to your past? Or did you prefer the old days of camping better? We can’t wait to see what you have to say! Happy remembering
Here is how I (Steve) camped growing up. This is not my picture, but that is the Camel pop-up where Dad fought with the poles at every KOA and mom furiously pumped the Coleman stove trying to get our supper going after a full day of traveling. The second photo is how we travel now
Here is our inspiration camper along with our current. Eerie similarity!
So bring on the photos and have fun!
Steve and Debbie

To clarify, the 1st photo doesn’t need to include a vintage Airstream. It can be any old photo of you camping. Or you can submit just one photo of you camping in a place that is nostalgic, a photo that is a commentary on how RVing has changed, or however you want to interpret the theme. We don’t have all the ideas or answers and want this to be however you interpret the theme, so be creative!
Here’s another one we looked at but didn’t buy. It is under our first thread “1975 Argosy Value.”

FYI/ I had a hard time finding this thread.
I usually find the monthly photo contest thread by searching the thread title, for example "July 2019 Photo* Contest" (or photography). I suspect a lot of other members also find the monthly photo thread this way. For whatever reason the search the title does not bring up the July contest. It does bring up the June contest and other past monthly photo contests however. Is this a glitch? I have seen this happen several times before. I suspect a lot of members will also have this problem and may cut down on participation.
Could a mod jump in on this?
Anybody else see this as a problem?

All you have to do is "go up" in the organizational structure -- see the blue arrow symbols [ " >"] at the top left? Click on "Photography" and then look at the top of the list for "July 2019 . . . "

No searching required with either shortcut.

Likewise, my early camping experiences are limited, and I do not have any photos. I used to pitch a pup tent like this in the backyard. The dog and I would sleep in it all summer.
Then the dog died. Someone borrowed the pup tent and never returned it. The world moved on, and one has no choice but to move with it. For many years, I did not own a dog, never mind an Airstream.
Does the fancy Airstream mean that "now" is better than "then"? Not really. They say one buys an Airstream to "create memories," but those tent-stakes from long ago stab deeper into the soul.

Thank you for your post, Fly at Night. Your “Then and Now” rings of truth that newer, bigger, more expensive does not equal better. I think many of us yearn for times when life was simple or less complicated. Remembering back to the old days of camping, when time and relationships were not secondary to technology - I can appreciate that.

So, in the "We've come a long way, baby" department...
My first family camping trip when I was five... "Morning, daddy!"
Our first "tin can" camper, a field rescue '63 Avion T-20 that my wife and I restored. We still have her for those vintage rallies...
And our "forever" Airstream, an '06 25' Safari SE... Modified to fit our style!

You have come a long way. You’re first picture has to be #1 in the cute kid contest. Great story and accompanying photos!

First picture, camping with mom, dad, sisters, grandma and grandpa in 1957. Second picture, what we're using to make memories with our grandkids.

Wow! RxGuy I love it. Not to say the new AS isn't sweet. However I sure love the older ones. Do you know the year and model? Is it still in the family? Very cool to have those memories and be able to create new ones is truly priceless.

Sorry Dennis, no help on the year and model. Here is a better picture of just the trailer. Maybe you can tell what it is from this picture. I have no idea. LOL
Unfortunately it's long gone from the family.

Thanks. The orange bedspread and pillows came with the "Special Edition" AS.
The airplane is a Canada 3000 model (airline is now defunct). The blimp is a USN blimp/bank.
The dog (my favourite beagle) has passed. I will always cherish the few AS trips we did together.
We do a "Then and Now" in the aviation rag I edit, and have featured everything from pilot flight bags to landing gear. It's always popular.
Carry on. Let's see more Then....and Now.

Living the dream in Banff, 1973.
8’ home made A-frame. No electricity, water, head. But lots of fun. And nothing ever broke. She spent another life as a utility trailer. It took 25 years to save up for the next one. A 25’ Airstream. Jim

Don't often like to interrupt the photo thread with too much chit-chat and no photo. But how tall are you, good looking young man.
