Headed down the Alaska Highway this past fall on my first full-time snowbird adventure.

Alaska Safari, looking to make the journey to Alaska and wondering about the roads. How often did you have to traverse roadways that put that much dirt on your AS?

Often. There will be lots of areas of construction, and repairs even if you stay on the main highway. They cannot work on the roads up there until after the spring thaw, so that's when they do it.

Also, their way of repairing frost heaves is to cut them out about 4" deep, then fill and level, then gravel, then seal-coat. Then after all the traffic has spread most of the loose gravel off the patch, they paint a new stripe, and that's it. You may come along and hit one of these areas in any stage of the repair.

For this reason, I suggest to people not to go until at least early July so most of the repair work is already done.

January Photo Contest

The photo below was taken in 2005 when I was "caravanning" to the 2005 Rocky Mountain Vintage Airstream Club Rally in Colorado. The 1960 Airstream Overlander in the foreground belongs to the Scheuermanns, and my 1978 Argosy Minuet 6.0 Metre is in the background. We were visiting the geographic center of the lower-48 states near the town of Lebanon, Kansas . . . there is a small park with a monument that is quite pleasant to visit.

Thanks to you all for the great pictures this month. Send more. Three more days and I will deliberate on them and announce a winner. Not an easy choice, but then the risk and prize is low.

I really love these kinds of themes - mainly because it is a great treat to go back through - and relive - past trips - I don't expect these to be on the short list - but I sure loved the time travel .....

Picture 2: Kluane Lake, Cottonwood RV Park, Yukon
Picture 3: Mount Robson, Robson Provincial Park, British Columbia

Hi Jay,

Great photos! Many many years ago I traveled the Alaska highway (before the Alaska pipeline!) and well remember Kluane Lake. Also, before I got old and, more importantly, started to break down physically, I did a lot of climbing and Robson was near the top of my "to-do" list. Never got to it but wondered what campground you were at in the picture?

Thanks for jogging my memory!

John S.
