Hi, finding a new camera case was almost as hard as finding the camera. Too big, too small, too cheaply made, too many inner or outer dimensions, and poor selection at the stores. I wanted to check them out at the stores and compare with Amazon. Well after reading about 1,000 reviews, [not really] I read a few where the owners were happy and have the same camera as I have. So I ordered one from Amazon. Will be here soon and I will know if it was the right choice for me. It's a Sony case, but the Sony store doesn't carry it. I need this so I can start carrying my new camera and semi-retire the Canon.

Hi, today my new Sony camera case from Amazon was delivered. This case is almost perfect. It comes with a shoulder strap that I won't be using. It has a front zipped compartment that will hold a memory card. The next compartment, also zippered will hold my spare battery. And of course the main zippered compartment hold my camera, and it's a good fit. The almost perfect part is the belt loop on the back. It is a double loop with a snap. This is a very good snap, but it is too hard to snap in place and would put too much pressure on the camera inside. I hand stitched the belt loop two inches from the top of the loop. This will allow for a tight fit on my belt. I had done this to my Canon camera case too. I didn't take a picture of the stitching because I don't think it will show in a picture.

Hi, OK I took a picture so you might be able to see where I sewed the belt loop. I used black thread so you will only see where the loop is sewn, right above the snap loop. This had to be sewn by hand.

Buying advice

A note of information, Effective July 13, Nikon stiopped selling repair parts to anyone but authorized repair centers which makes their cameras a little harder to maintain.

This is not a problem with Canon.

I have 3 Nikon's and like them all. The DSLR camera's seem to operate much faster, and for me are easier to operate, than my compact Nikon P7000. They also have a longer battery life, even though they use the same battery. The compact camera keeps the screen on a lot more than the DSLR's do, consuming the battery's energy.

Digital cameras are evolving very rapidly and if you are price sensitive, buying a discontinued or gently used version of one of the cameras you are considering will save a lot of $$$.

I'm a pro photographer with a lot of heavy gear that I get tired of packing around, so I really love my iphone to shoot personal photos with when not working. They are making the cameras in cell phones better and better and so lightweight and handy.

Well it's that time again.

I hope it was a good one and I continue to post some nice pictures on this forum, in my blog, and in my thread "Bob and Lee's random trip."

Today I bought the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V at the Sony store in the South Coast Plaza Mall. This was the first camera to catch my eye, but I wanted to do some studying before I made a decision to part with my hard earned money. None of these cameras have a view finder, I will have to learn to live with that. The Panasonic was the flashiest looking, being red and it was the only one without a pop-up flash. [I liked that] The Canon would have been the easiest one to use because we already have two Canons at home. And the Canon comes with an external battery charger. [I really like that] As mentioned earlier, I had some bad experiences with batteries that had to be charged inside of the camera.

Last night, I found out that I could buy an external battery charger with batteries for the Sony. [After market] So today I decided to buy the Sony and order an external battery charger. Too much to list, but the Sony does so much more that the other two cameras. It also costs quite a bit more. Last night I found out that the Sony went on sale. It was $419.00 and the sale price was $379.00 plus a free $15.00 SD card. Another silent part of my deal was that I had to buy my next camera in a store. I got a letter from Jaguar saying that they would give me a $100.00 credit card for just road testing a new car. This is right up my alley. So this camera was only costing me the sale price, less $100.00 of free money. This would have made any of the deals a little bit sweeter. Thinking about the aftermarket battery charger and batteries, I searched again and found a Sony factory battery charger and spare battery on Amazon.com for less than half price. [they are on order] I have been playing with my new toy [wife calls it] all evening and it will be some time before I take some pictures to see; Hope well it works.
Hi, after just over 3 years, a million pictures, and a million miles of traveling, [I really didn't count all of this] the Sony camera was great. But recently the electronics of this camera started to do strange things or not work at all. Then I noticed spots in my pictures and no way for me to fix this. And finally, I can't see the screen while taking pictures outside so I aim and shoot and hope for the best. I now have another new camera. This time it is a Panasonic. The main thing that I was looking for was a view finder and the Panasonic seems to be the only one with one. It has 30 X zoom and an adjustable electronic view finder. Like an SLR, you see what you get. There is a view finder lens in the back, but not in the front. It also has a screen and a switch to change from screen to view finder. This camera just happened to be on sale at Costco too. Today was my first day to try it out.

I bought a Panasonic Lumix model # DMC-ZS40SCP

Zoom test.

Hi, today I was in Washington DC. [not Washington state] Here are two pictures of a clock tower. One at normal and one at full zoom. WOW.

Can you even see the clock tower, in the center, of the first picture?

Hi, OK I have only tried twice so far and only the one of Dusty having fun on the grass worked so far.

Well my video of Dusty won't work on this forum, so I changed my video to MP4.

Great zoom and yes, I could see the clock tower in the first photo. Looks like it was at least 2 or 3 blocks away.
