Lovely pictures!

I think this is the one that allows no pets on the island, not even in your vehicle.

We turned around at the entrance.

You are allowed to have pets in the MD State Park on Assateaque. In fact just this year they expanded the number of areas where pets are allowed to include the ones with electrical.

I also believe they are allowed on the National park as I have seen them on the beach

Assateague Island

Assateague is one of my favorite beach camping sites. We try to go there at least once every year. We haven't camped at the MD side only the national side. I didn't know there was hookups on the MD side so we will have to try that next time. Great pictures and one of these times I would like to attend the annual roundup on Chickatague side.
Happy camping nm1oqrz

Maybe it was Chincoteague. It had wild horses on it, off the outer banks of NC area, I believe. My geography is actually quite dreadful....out there somewhere!

I remember reading the sign and turning around before we crossed the bridge. That was a couple of years ago.

There are wild horses on The Outer Banks in NC but they are out in 4WD country, no bridge.... There's no way you could get an Airstream out there!

Dogs are prohibited from entering Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge in VA. They are allowed on national and state parks in Assateague. .

My guess is you were trying to enter the Wildlife Refuge.

Assateaque is my absolute favorite campground. I first went there in 1993 with a cheap tent thrown in the back of a car and no idea what I was doing. In 2002 I upgraded to a VW camper van. I built a tear drop camper in 2005 that lasted for a couple of years, than upgraded to a cute little Serro Scotty until eventually ending up with our 1974 Globe Trotter.

We'll be in Assateaque in about 6 weeks and then for a short visit around halloween. I can't wait!

There always is a guy like me in the crowd…

I strongly dislike Assateaque. We haver been there numerous times and it is doubtful we would return because of the ponies. When they are around so are copious amounts of ticks and flies. They also tend to collectively crap in the same spot. We always seem to get lucky and that spot is connected to our site. A guy comes around multiple times a day to remove the offerings, but the ponies just come back and deposit more. They have also become very aggressive about getting at your food. Last time we were there one stuck it's head right through the door within screen to take my daughters carrots and hummus. I also dislike going there because of all the people who just stop their car and get out to take pictures without any thought of the line of cars behind them. They have been upgrading the bathhouses and increasing the number of sites. That should help make the sandy parking lot feel even more pronounced.

All of your points are perfectly valid and I could see how any of them would keep someone from coming back to Assateaque.

I remember a few years ago that the ponies were considerably more aggressive than usual. Since then they seem to have calmed down a lot.

The absolute worst thing is the driver who stops wherever they please to snap a picture of the ponies. That is my biggest pet peeve as well.

Overall though, my family is attached to the place. We look forward to it every year.
