After working on the interior paint removal for a couple of weeks I got back to working on the frame. I thought that scraping rust was a pain until I started applying the POR-15. The POR-15 is great stuff, but one doesn't realize how many hard to get at areas there are on a frame and how tough it is to keep the stuff from dripping onto you as you crawl around in the dirt under the trailer. I thought I had protected myself from the POR-15 until I removed my coveralls and found three black spots (dime size) on my T shirt. You guessed it, I also have three nice black spots on my chest

Question... Is there a need to put a thin layer of insulation or some other material between the frame and the plywood to cushion the two. Did the factory just use the plywood to hold the insulation in place when they were putting a trailer together?
I plan to start replacing the first 4' of floor tomorrow so let me know about the cushion between wood and metal.

It was my perception that the insulation was set over the top to make installation easier not anything as far as the plywood to frame joints.

Frame looks great!

Yes, mine had it over the rails.. Yes, AS did it originally... No, I don't think it's a good idea... all the rust on my frames was from the insulation holding the moisture against the frame rails under the wood... even if the wood looked ok, some of my crossmembers turned to dust due to the rust there.. in summary... don't do it!

Nice framework by the way... can we see pics of the other trailer too?

Wally, you've got a couple of very nice looking trailers. I'm with XBob2 watching with envy. As far as the cushion between the frame and the plywood, I'm not sure if it's needed, but I'm planning on using foam that is used in construction between foundations and the sill plate as a vapor barrier between the steel and the plywood. A buddy of mine who is working on my trailer restoration used this on his trailer, and it seems like a good idea. Airstream's old method of putting the insulation on over the frame seemed to have simply trapped a bunch of moisture on the top edge of the frame and caused a lot of rust. [On edit, I was writing my response when Marc posted his and I see he had the same thought about the rust.]

I'll be working on the Flying Cloud first and will be collecting stuff for it's big brother. My wife was O.K. with the second trailer, but the little guy must be finished before I work on the other.

Nice warm and fuzzy boy meets trailer(s) story... Kinda brought tears to my eyes witnessing the wrath of time though, thanks for posting.

About the plywood to steel interface, I had wood rotted six feet into the trailer where water had wicked above the frame rails - but that doesn't mean not to place some thermal break in between. And being vague is intentional, I slapped plywood back onto bare metal but I was only doing the back sheet, so I don't have a product in mind to suggest....

In all honesty I was on a parts search and the person in Seattle didn't have what I was looking for, but knew a lady that was going to send her 67 Overlander to the wrecking yard. So what would you have done? There was room next to the old barn, so I made a quick trip over the mountain and drug it home. It was free, so I couldn't let it go to waste. Now what do I do?

Maybe a $5.00 raffle or the BEST OFFER?

P.S....The 67 Ambassador next to it was a $600.00 find. It is camp ready.

Wally I'd suggest trading material there, see if someone needs a new project, or some donor panels and can help you trade for the window parts etc you need. There are other airstreamers on here sick enough to own multiple units that may have extra parts laying around, plus you saved it from the scrap pile, at least for now.

I don't know if you would call us owners "sick", maybe aafflicted??? I have 4 myself: a '97 30' Excella 1000, a '73 27' Overlander, a '75 Argosy 24' and a 73 Argosy 22'. And...I know where there is 68 Overlander for sale. Wife said no more right now.
