Our new Cloud 1958

........... has arrived and is sitting pretty ... will begin photo-documenting today, begin cleaning up the interior - apparently habitat for unwanted guests.... weather so/so in the pacific NW with showers forecast for a whole week!!

we plan to use this one as guest house/studio, need to decide what/how much to remove....

removed bathroom - it was soooo tiny, didn't have a toilet, and was in gross condition. will do without one, use double kitchen sink for hand-washing etc.

removed all the shelves etc in rear (bedroom) area, which is now a nice open space w room for a queen size bed.

removed small hanging cabinet unit above the sink - and it will never return....

which leaves us w the fridge and adjacent storage area, and the storage area next to the stove... floor - ceiling, makes a nice functional divider between the front and back of the trailer.

need to repair back sub-flooring; then install wooden queen bed frame, tall enough to re-use 2 of the original bed frame-drawers;

after paint job: install new thin plywood sub-floor on top of existing; bamboo snap-together flooring in kitchen and front area, ca. 60 sq ft...

paint job: over original zolatone(?): kilz and off white interior acrylic/latex >>!!? pls advise if this is a bad combination/ will peel??? <<<<

is the vent you are seeing in the last photo a "sly light" that opens up? what is it called? need to find a replacement, and i don't see it offered by the vent folks....

know anyone parting out a 58 or so FC? -sabine

If you need to get rid of the stove and refridgerator let me know. Are you re-using the cabinet hardware and the Humphrey Gas light? I can use those too.

That large vent you're referring to is called an Astradome and is offered by Vintage Trailer Supply, too, but they are out of stock. They're supposed to get the new and cheaper version in soon. Here's the link:

sorry mello mike, for not responding to your PM -- got carried away by all this and real life too ;-) ... we do want to keep some of the LOOK, and whether or not the appliances need to be replaced depends on whether they work or not.... the fridge is an awful, rusted mess inside!
the gas light -- is just a small narrow unit that sticks out from the kitchen cab - we don't need it, also the gas line leading up to it....

What is the Secret to removing the Refrigerator from our California style 58 Cloud???????
the fridge is a Marvel in bad condition, still don't know if it works, and it looks just terrible on the inside....

You need to look at taking off the silver trim and then you should see the screws holding it in. Did for me.

Your gas lamp shaft is from a Veritas style lamp. Parts are scarce but can be sourced. As for the fridge, there are probably screws at the back down low on the fridge frame. Do you have the skinny broom closet by the entry door? If so, you can access them from there. Is there a gas line connected to the fridge or just a 120 volt plug?

You can also make your own AstroDome with 1" and 1/2" aluminum angle, some clear lexan sheets and salvaged lifter mechanisms. I have one on mine and am pleased with its looks and function. Let me know if you what me to post plans.

Mine had a few nails through the lower mount that it sits on. Fought it for days before I found them and then it slid right out.

flyfshr, we will definitely go the DIY route re the Astradome. pls post the plans :-) !! maybe in its own thread so they won't get buried here.... thanks for the offer! and pls let us know... (i.e. link) - we do have that ridiculously narrow door thingie on the left of the fridge....

the FC will be stationary, (husband is working to get the 57 shasta (man cave) road ready) .
that decision makes it a lot easier on us fixing the FC up as guest house, unique artist residence for husband's future students/co workers....
we admire all the effort that goes into restoration work, but as a former architect (long time ago, almost forgotten) i have my own ideas of space&comfort. i do love the challenge of small spaces, that's why my professional interest was a lost cause in this country. (originally from krautland :-) )

will keep updating.... order from vintage supply to arrive soon - they were all out of the window operators !!!!! working on door now.... it's a freaking mess!!

progress re sanding the remaining cabinet units; the fridge is OUT :-) - thanks for the support, it helped. patched up holes in the aluminum interior wall -- not after perfection, you can tell; bought bamboo flooring; working on windows now, bought the glass but got stuck applying the gasket.... (see below) also, the door isn't such an eye sore any more, the interior had been painted brown... ugh

removable windows were cleaned up, and are ready for gasket etc to attach.....>>>>wondering if it is necessary to squirt some kind of sealant into the gasket's channel before attaching the gasket to the metal edge? <<<< i saw that done in a video, they used silicone... which apparently is a no-no (attacks aluminum?) and also is probably quite messy. i read thru hours worth of mssges on this board, but found no reference to my problem.... except one person is suggesting to use 3M Super Weather Strip Adhesive - which sounds good to me since it won't make a smeary mess..... the gasket is quite squirrelly, hard to control, imagine squishy goo in it.... sounds like extra clean-up work to me....

i wasn't going to use anything inside the gasket, figured the screws would tighten it, but husband thinks otherwise....

any advice? what to do/use? thanks in advance

Sorry for the delay, took me a while to find all three of the files. Why can't archiving be easier??

Anyway, this should be a fairly simple creation with a little skill and the proper tools. I learned from experience that you need to add 1/4" to the measurement on the long side and 1/8" to the ends to account for the bending. I had to make a second one since the first one was too short. Took me an afternoon and it has held up well. I also replaced the bug screen in the removable frame with black shade cloth to cut down on our intense sunlight here in the desert.

thanks so much, flyfshr !! once we get to that point, i'll have to ask you how you connect the dome to the rest of the thing..... at this point, a plain piece of plexi glass does the job.
