If the dilemma is between a bit primitive vs. having all the features of a "travel trailer", then the original Basecamp may not be for you. But since you seem to be considering a teardrop, I suggested it because it is a compromise between the two.
It is more solid and enclosed than a tent, more roomy than a teardrop (e.g. you can stand up to get dressed, and great for lounging), you don't have to go outside to make coffee in the morning or cook, and with a catalytic heater and a porta-potty it has about everything but a wet-bath.
We love ours so much we stopped using the 23' and sold it. In the past two years we have traveled 10,000 miles, gone from sea level to over 12,000 feet, experienced temperatures from 22 to 112, and spent 100 nights in it. Plus: 100% cool factor.

Microwave requires 120Vac. Historically, the 1000 watt inverter that Airstream installs as part of their grossly over priced solar package is insufficient to power their installed microwave. Go figure......

The optional microwave in the new Basecamp does seem a bit inconsistent IMO with the marketing of the unit as a boondocking "roughing it" home base. Limiting the inverter to 1000 makes sense I guess, as a way of ruling out microwave use off-grid.
Aren't there small microwaves, with manual analog controls, in which the Low power setting requires only 750 watts? I seem to recall reading about such a unit recently. FWIW we avoid microwaves at all costs, as propane can do the same job with the right cookware.

Hopefully they offer the option of thicker cushions in the future. Shouldn't be too much of a problem for production - it's a fairly easy template to work with.

Absolutely. I don't mean to sound too critical. I just wish it were an option is all. They felt fine when I tested them for a minute or so, but not sure how well they will feel after 8 hours.

I think it's safe to say that Airstream has found the market they were looking for with the basecamp. Check out the snowboard under the trailer tires!

Nice images Denver.
If you could have one of each I'd certainly add it to our collection. It may not be for all of us but for those that love it enjoy the hell out of it.

it's the hipster's drink of choice... my nephew (a fellow Marine) was telling me about some ops they were on and how they were all drinking PBR afterwards. I made some disparaging comments about PBR and he said they all loved PBR. Different generation, different tastes I guess.

The whole PBR thing is pretty strange. They're not drinking it ironically, they actually seem to enjoy it. I might use PBR to bait slugs in the garden, but otherwise I have no use for it.

My take is that these "hipsters" have themselves convinced that PBR is good because the beer budget is too low. Quantity overcomes quality. I'd heard that adolescence has become extended into the late twenties so I'll take this as evidence thereof.
