new model A/S ???

Anyone see the small article in April 04 copy of 4 Wheel & Off Road magazine? Here is what the article says:

Remember those cool old aluminum Airstream trailers that looked like a cross between the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile and a B-52 bomber? Well, Airstream is still in business based out of Jackson Center, Ohio, and it is now releasing a new mini-trailer known as the Basecamp.

By partnering with Nissan Design America and Kelty, Airstream's new tag-along trailer can be used for a weekend camping excursion, or you could pull out part of the interior and use it to haul your bike or quad to the trail or dunes. Created for a new generation of campers, this unique product provides a fold-out tent feature developed by Kelty, but will be marketed at a lower price, offering a new range of consumers the ability to participate in the Airstream way of life. (end of quote)

Picture of unit is quite different. I wonder if they will really make it?

There goes the neighborhood!

Hi Whistler

Did I not read somewhere that Thor is part owner with Airstream???? If so maybe this article is realting to their Thor Fifth Wheels or TT's - it is the in thing up here to have the back of the TT a garage for the 4X4, dirt bikes and snowmobiles - quite a good marketing angle - and it certainly has taken off. The fifth wheels have this fancy flip out screen room at the back - what will they think of next....

would be neat to see an A/S "Truck Camper" with a cool looking bullet shape roof over the truck cab and follow towards the same rear end today.

F.Y.I.

Wade and Pete bought A/S from Beatrice Foods in 1979. The company became "Thor Industries" in 1980.

Thor Industries, Inc., was founded on August 29, 1980, when Wade F. B. Thompson and Peter B. Orthwein acquired Airstream, the most recognized name in the industry. The name "Thor" combined the first two letters of each entrepreneur's name. Despite its famous image, Airstream had not fared well during the economic downturn of the late 1970's. By focusing on improving quality while reducing costs, Airstream returned to profitability in its first year under the new Thor management.

Hey I did read that somewhere? on a site that had a pink background???

Guess I was out in left field - not too hard to do sometimes

Nevertheless that "Basecamp" would make a real sharp Snowmobile Trailer.

I got that from the Thor Industries web site.

It is interesting that Thor is now the biggest RV company, bigger than Fleetwood. They have been on a aquisition diet for the past few years.

Yes and Fleetwood isn't doing all that well from what I understand, yet Thor is doing beyond well.

They have some quality problems on some products & Coleman pulled their camper name licence from Fleetwood.

Fleetwood is sueing Coleman - but lost the first round

Well that's putting it nicely! I have heard some real horror stories about their quality control. Then some Fleetwood owner always pipes up that "since Fleetwood is such a big company, they are bound to have quality problems." What a load....

I remember checking out a brand new Prowler. When I opened the closet, I saw sunlight in the corner!! I was stunned. If light could get through, imagine what else- bugs, wind, water, etc. I never have looked at Fleetwood the same again. Actually, I try not to look at Fleetwoods...

I saw the basecamp at the Chantilly, VA show last month. Very interesting, very tiny. All I remeber is that it is a very basic, little trailer with some sleep space and that's about it. It did not look like an AS at all.
