Hi

You loose power at altitude, but normally the engines are "over size" for the required output. At some (usually unspecified) point, the power decrease is enough to drop the output. The unknown is just when / where.

Fuel also matters, propane will not deliver as much power as gas. Weird ethanol blends may not work at all in your generator. If they do, E85 will deliver less power as well.

Newbie Generator Questions

I am a newbie planning to purchase a 2021 Basecamp 20x with AC. Per the specs 4,000 watts is required. I plan to tow with a mid size SUV.

My questions:

Fuel Source: Why not use propane from the tanks rather than carrying around gasoline? Would that use too much propane? (Not sure where I would store the gas).

Two 2K or one 4K?: The 4K generators are heavy so I see many people recommend two, 2K generators running parallel.

Storage: Where do you store during travel? Inside my SUV would smell of gas and leery of storing on top.

Thanks!

Basecamp Generator

If your Basecamp has 30 Amp power inlet, a 3400 watt generator can handle it. I use a Champion 3400 watt inverter dual fuel only on propane. It’s never had gasoline in it.

I don’t like hauling gasoline and I can deal without the smell and other hazards.

Here’s my setup. I had to add a quick connect to my propane system to run the generator.

I modified the OEM Champion propane harness to split the two regulators so I can connect to the Airstream low pressure system. I can also run on a portable tank if I want. The gray hoses are 12 feet long and have quick connects on both ends to hook stuff up.

I did go with 3/8 quick connects but 1/4 will also work. Do not try hooking up without the large Champion regulator. It’s required to feed fuel to the engine correctly.

This setup runs everything in my 2007 International CCD 22 footer on the generator in the back of my truck. I did add an EZConnector power inlet on the front of the Airstream for convenience. I also replaced the OEM one on the streetside rear utilities area.

Honda EU2200 and Micro Air

I bought a 2021 Basecamp about a month and a half ago, and immediately purchased a Honda 2200 propane conversion from GenConnex. The AC would trip after maybe 5-20 minutes. I bought a MicroAir easy start from their website. It arrived in a couple days, and I installed it. I hate electric work and normally avoid it like the plague. I have been running my AC off both house power (15 amp) and my generator with no problems. It is a game changer. And if I could do it, you can. Seriously. A couple hours and some video help and it was easy.

For house power, I use my included power cable, a 30 amp to 15 amp converter, and a 10 gauge 25 foot extension cord.
