2017 Basecamp Axle Recall

The 235/55r x 18 Goodyear Assurances are a curious tire. They are standard load but rated to carry 50 PSI.

The GVWR does not change from the 3500 it was previously because the GAWR is 3150. They assume at least 350 on the Ball.

The axle itself is a 3500 pound axle. If you did have some unusual loading requirement I'm certain the 235's would never be a problem at that weight.

If you did want the larger tires I'm sure there is room now. The reduced rolling resistance of the 235's might make up for the additional height.

Thanks for the clarification Andy. I noticed and was curious about the 51psi too.

To me, it seems a slippery slope to anchor the tightrope they're trying to walk.

Let's hope no one ever has to test it...

We've now talked to Airstream and our truly nice repair person. Airstream told him he can release our Basecamp as long as we check for tire wear and if we notice any, to stop towing it immediately. That's a fairly crappy solution and I may be cynical, but I suspect it may have something to do with TX Lemon Law which states we have a claim if the unit has been in for repairs 30 days or longer within a 24 month period. We're at 26 days now since we received it in February. We are not done talking to Airstream about this.

The 50 PSI capacity on the Assurance is due to the 149 MPH speed rating.

Usually getting that kind of speed rating means it is a well made tire that will stay in balance and dissipate heat nicely. At a lower speed rating it could be an Extra Load tire. As it is a much better tire than a Marathon.

Thank you for this document. I wonder why it says: 'Transport Canada Recall Number 2017-151'. Has anyone gotten a letter from Airstream yet? Searching it and I found it under Transport Canada. I can not pull it up on the NHTSA website for the US.

It's unbelievable they are allowing only 1.75 hours for this repair... That looks like a 3-4 hour job, minimum. Cutting of gas lines, gas pressure tests, tire mount and balance. Geeze, there asking for problems.

The clearance between the gas line and that bolt in the picture looks problematic to me without any protection for the gas line. I see that bolt rubbing on that gas line causing a leak in the near future.

I also wondered about that bolt being so close to the copper gas line, but it could be a camera angle. Something to look at before leaving the dealership after the axle replacement.

Hope that works, saw them this morning when I dropped Luna Sea off for two unrelated issues ,(non axle). May we all be blessed with quick resolutions.

The vents behind gas tanks do in FACT let water pour in! Woke up this morning, HOURS away from any dealer with an inch or more water on the floor! Not happy! Among 2 other leaks, really starting to question the quality I thought I was getting for forty thousand dollars!

Got the letter from AS today. Called their number as requested and got voice mail on the general customer service line. Odd that they didn't dedicate a line for this recall.

Went on to call my dealer. I'm scheduled to bring it in on the 25th. They asked me to leave it overnight and I reminded them that I am 100 miles away; not interested in a 400 mile effort. They agreed to do it as I wait. AS says it should be 2 hours.

New axle, 2 new "low profile" tires/wheels and new "low profile" spare. Service manager has no info on changes in load capacity or ground clearance. She will look into that info and have it when I show up.

That is the same issue that I had/am having. They know that water will come in through the vents; however, it is supposed to be contained and drain out through some holes. They need to figure out a better design. Mine has undergone some major revisions, but it is still leaking. Check out the "basecamp issues" thread for some photos. Good luck!!!

Just found out about all these issues when I called my dealer Colonial to ask an unrelated question. Without ever seeing this forum before today I can confirm I have had all the same issues: leak from closed ceiling fan, flood from under the fridge thru the vents behind propane tanks, missing spare crank, also a leak through a side wall seam towards back on driver side that dripped onto seat cushion soaking it...and now I know about the axle/tire issue...AFTER our 2000 mile one-way trip to our new home in Utah [emoji849]. Sounds like my new favorite toy is gonna be sitting at the AS dealer in Salt Lake City for a while [emoji30][emoji30][emoji30]
