I saw some advertised in the latest circular...but its listed under "concrete products". so I poked around on sika's website, and found descriptions of the material...compared it to what they sell at Airstream's website. I'm wondering if these 2 things are the same, and just packaged and marketed for different purposes.

it would be nice to be able to just stop by one of the 3 HD locations on my way home from work to pick up sealant, should the need arise...rather than pay 5 bucks for shipping.

anyway. Sikaflex 221 is described as "...a high-quality multi purpose non-sag 1-c polyurethane sealant that cures on exposure to atmospheric humidity to form a durable elastomer".

"Sikaflex Construction Sealant" is described as "..a moisture-cured, 1-component, polyurethane-based non sag elastomeric sealant"

Sounds like the same thing to me. what do you think? close enough?

that would be nice, it would save the pre planning when you need to seal something.

They are not equivalent. The 221 contains polyisocyanate prepolymer, not in the construction sealant. I think the 221 also has slightly higher elongation.

They're not equal, but I'm not saying you shouldn't use the HD sealant. I use what the factory used.

Austin Hardware & Supply has Sikaflex-221 at $5.47 a tube. 'Gray' is fairly close to aluminum.

My wife has stopped asking why the Vulkem and Sikaflex tubes are in the freezer. This greatly extends the shelf life of an open tube. Cap the end with aluminum foil and put it in a couple layers of bread wrappers. You can nearly use it right away (I'd worry about condensation on your applied bead if it was cold in a humid environment).

I just exhumed this thread to find out if there is any reasonably priced source for Sikaflex 221. Also does any one know what precious metal it contains. Is there any reasonable alternative for small touch ups?

Many of the Sikaflex products are used regularly in the construction trade. You should be able to find a construction sealants specialty shop in any large city. Here in Baltimore I know there are several. Try searching a thebluebook.com in your area for sealants or check the Sikaflex site for local dealers.

I have been using the Home Depot Sikaflex on aluminum boats and now use it on the A/S. The grey blends with the aluminum and seems to set up smoother than Vulkem. It has not failed for several years either on the sunnyside of the trailer or underneath. I had to do permanent fix to a jury rig repair on the bellypan and literally had to cut through the Sikaflex I used on the repair to remove them. Be sure to read the tube at HD they also carry construction adhesive and other Sikaflex products on the concrete aisle. Don't know about "Elongation" don't think my wife would like it anyway.

I've been using both Vulkem and PL sealant... they appear very similar; both are quite slow in curing. The PL stuff is available at the local hardware store.
