Scratches in my 1967 Airstream

My girl and I have recently purchased a 1967 Overlander International as our first foray into travel trailering.

I am in the process of my first polishing of a pretty rough Overlander. I have noticed after stripping the clear coat.and wool bonnet first cut a lot of profanities in the aluminium.

Is there any chance of sanding through the outer layer (if there is one)?

I guess that's my real question, does the aluminium go all the way through the skin.

I have sanded one spot with 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit and everything came out fine, with the exception of I didn't sand deep enough to remove the middle finger scratched into my baby.

Any information would be helpful.

Your trailer is made of Alclad aluminum Alclad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And the surface layer can be sanded through so be careful.
