hypothetical questions. :)

How difficult would it be to graft the shell end of one Airstream, onto the shell body of another? Assuming the donor shell was off frame, obviously, and devoid of anything inside, and the receiving body was on frame, and empty also?

Theo,

Well from what I have read here and seen, a lot of rivet drilling will be required. Andy mentioned something about "blind" rivets and Velkum (sp?) holding on some skin sections. Also you may run into different types of finishes on the aluminum.

The idea does sound cool. I'm guessing that you want the wrap around windows on an older trailer??

Theo,

If you do it right, it would not only be solid, but cool. Being in mostly unchartered territory, I'd have to say if you tried it, you had better know what you're doin'!

Theo.

That repair method will depend on what two years trailer will be involved.

A shell from one year may not fit the shell of another year, OR, from a different plant.

Many of the differences can be accommodated, but an excellent working knowledge of the product will be an absolute prerequisite.

This would not be a project to undertake on a "learn as you go basis."

Thank you, Guys, you have given me a lot to think about. The situation is that a friend has his eye on an older A/S, that he can have for nothing, that has substantial damage to the rear 5 feet. Something puctured the skin, and ripped a massive tear in the skin, damaging the struts, and bending the roofline. There is, however, no damage whatsoever forward of a point 5'3 inches from the rear wall. I have no clue which model the trailer is, but the grafting would be done with a donor of the same type, and year. He knows of a few really sorry looking ones in junkyards around the country, so finding the donor will not be difficult.

I certainly would not consider doing this unless a prior knowledge of the structure was not assured.

Neat idea!

If your friend's unit a center bath? I think it would be really cool to join two units together to make a four axle 38ft long trailer. With two bathrooms

Theo, I notice that you're in West Tennessee. I'm in Nashville, and I've tossed around the idea of converting an Airstream into a hauler for my Formula Ford racecar. (My former car trailer was stolen last summer - major bummer!)

It sounds like the one your friend knows of might be perfect for my project. If he decides not to pursue it, please keep me in mind.

Thanks,
Bob McKeown

I will tell him you are champing at the bit.. this will either make him go get it, or give up the project.
