How to attach a value to this exterior damage?

So, this damage happened. I don't know what to ask the landlord for compensation.
The place I'm parked decided to dig a trench behind me, a few inches from my bumper (to repair the park's sewer/dump system). A worker slammed into my rear corner panel with a pick-axe tool and made this dent that also cuts through the clearcoat.
It's about 2 inches long.
The photos are of a dirty AS because they were digging --*a lot -- and I got coated with a fine mist of mud.

I don't know what sort of compensation to ask for.

I don't really want to have the panel replaced, because I'm afraid it will invite more problems than it solves to pull the rear apart and replace a panel.
Also, I paid a lot of money for the Cilajet nanocoating to protect the finish (whch BTW has worked remarkably well at preventing filiform corrosion from the salt air, so please let's not get off-topic on the value of Cilajet).
This damage cuts through the protective coating. Replacing the panel will require new Cilajet, which is not the biggest factor, but a factor nonetheless.

So one way to look at this is what will the damage do to my resale value?
Another thing would be what can I do to mitigate without replacing the panel?
Another way to look at it would be the cost to go to a dealer and have the whole panel replaced.
You may have other ideas as well?

It's the right rear corner just above the taillight. This is a 2015 model.

Thank you.

Sorry for the hit. The pictures don't show up for me in the app but my suggestion would be to send pics to AS service in Jackson Center and get an estimate. Talk to whatever dealer did the Cilajet and get an estimate from them on that. That would be my starting point for negotiations.

Or file a claim and have your insurance carrier do the same and manage the process with the place you're parked.

Good luck.

They should pay to have it cleaned and maybe recoated if you're not actually going to repair it. I can't see the dent, however.

Provided you can avoid any filiform corrosion at this site due to the damage to the clearcoat, this one ding isn't going to have a material impact on resale value down the road because frankly after a few years of use, this ding will be one of many you will accumulate. I would clean the site, apply your corrosion resistant product and call it a day.

If you posted pictures, I can't see them. I had a lower rear panel replaced on my AS several years ago at Jackson Center and have not had any problems with it. I would get an estimate to have the panel replaced and present it to the responsible parties. You can elect to repair the existing panel after the matter has been settled. It is extremely difficult to straighten aluminum since it stretches when dented.

No photo visible here either FYI -- in Firefox on Mac laptop. Echoing other comments to send photo to Jackson Center, and to have the landlord's insurance company and yours work on this ASAP. Also recommend using email for all communication.

Good luck!

Don’t forget to add the cost of taking your AS to JC if you are not gong to have it repaired locally. If you don’t already have dings and scrapes I would get the panel replaced. I had serious damage to the driver side upper panel and a gouge to the aluminum on the lower panel on my one year old pristine Serenity. My insurance was ready to waive the deductible and pay me 2,500 to forego replacing the lower panel and I declined because I would see the scrape every time I looked at the AS, but that is just me.

Send a message via ICQ to SilverPal2
I agree with the suggestion to send photos to Jackson Center and get an estimate, then submit the estimate to insurance for payment. I send most of my clients to JC for estimates because they do quality work.

FYI -- Your links lead to "403 Permission Denied" probably because I am not logged in at your site. Once you learn to attach photos here, it gets easier. My first trip down that road took a while to play out!

Photos are still not accessible.

I would ask for compensation, per estimate from Airstream, which should include repair and continuation of warranty of the treatment you purchased.
I would ask additionally the cost of transportation to the repair facility, Airstream in Jackson Center Ohio or other locations you might have to travel too.
I would ask additionally for reimbursement at an hourly rate for your time involved and other travel expenses (like motel or airline tickets)
You could ask Airstream to note loss of value in their estimate, for each type of repair. If you have it repaired there will be a choice made as to the type of rivets used, bucked solid rivets or Olympic type shaved rivets. If bucked rivets are used it cost more, but IMO less loss of value. If Olympic rivets are used it cost less but the rivets show a repair has been made (to the trained eye). If I see the repair I see loss of value.

After receiving proper compensation for the damage, either pocket the money or have it repaired to your satisfaction.
Or, you could go this route and add some art >> http://www.airforums.com/forums/f381...ml#post2047576

add edit:
If you have not already, call the police and get an accident report. This will be to your benefit if down the road the guilty party and their insurance company does not do what is right for you. If the person who damaged your trailer was an employee of your landlord, then you will deal with the landlord and their insurer. If it was a contractor hired by the landlord, you will have to deal with them and their insurer too. It can get complicated when no one wants to pay.

Thanks for the photos. When you send them to Airstream's Jackson Center for an estimate, may I suggest that you include some additional shots, which show a wider perspective of the rear of your unit? You might also consider arranging the lighting so that the dent is made very obvious.

Has your insurance company, and the other one, inspected the damage and given you a preliminary estimate? Off the top of my head, I would consider touching up the clear coat ASAP, and maybe leaving everything as-is for a while.

Good luck!

Thanks Peter (and all)
I sent new photos off to the original dealer as a start, since they are 2000 miles closer than Jackson Center. I'm waiting for an answer.

Two new shots attached for your amusement.

I did smear it liberally with the Cilajet wax, for now.

Perfect new shots, thanks! To these eyes, the damage is relatively minor, and I would be surprised if an insurance company is going to pay for that rear corner curved panel to be replaced, given how chintzy they are these days.

Take the money and run? [and have a good story to tell around the campfires down the road? ]

Happy Trails.

That looks like a case of your favorite beverage and a sincere apology.
