Corrosion on door hinges

Have read about products and techniques to treat filiform corrosion along beltline, but this on hinges is particularly thick. Should I try to buff this off ? Maybe with Dremel buffing wheel? And how to refinish the hinge afterward? It's not aluminum is it? Appreciate suggestions.

It is cast aluminum. I'd try the dremmel, but it going to take patience. Mask and clear coat afterwards.

Unbelievable. That is not normal corrosion, but looks like it has been subject to, perhaps, salt spray and never cleaned. There are also smears of something which almost looks like oven cleaner.

Okay, enough astonishment on my part. I would be surprised if a wheel on a Dremel tool would suffice to end up with a reasonable appearance. Masking, wet sanding with progressively finer grades of wet-or-dry sandpaper, and then polishing might work best. If you are not comfortable with doing that kind of work yourself, having a professional aluminum refinisher would be best. And yes, the hinges are cast aluminum.

Might start with a wire brush wheel then finer and finer grits or emory paper then polish. That think parked at the ocean. I would look at the belly and clean and seal that as well if it looks anything like that.

I agree that "corrosion" is weird. It may be more like oxidation. Perry g has a point if it has lived next to salt water, but I would hesitate to seal the belly pan as unsealed seams are part of the design to enable the belly to dry out.

I have polishinged a pile of aluminum motorcycle parts. I use a bench mounted buffer with 8" wheels. A Dremel is not going to touch that. Since they are on the trailer, buffing isn't an option. I would buy silver Rustoleum hammer finish in silver and cover up the ugly.

By seal I meant to coat the belly metal with something like POR15. It works on aluminum as well as steel.

Mine were corroded - although not as badly as yours. Looks to be a major job to try to polish them up especially without removing them from the trailer.

Following the lead of another forum, member I carefully cleaned mine up a bit with emery paper then applied "Thomas' Liquid Stainless Steel" paint. It did a pretty good job and still looks fine after about five years.

A bit expensive, but the smallest kit (meant for painting kitchen appliances to look like SS)
is more than you will ever need.

I also used it on the alum. surrounds to my front mounted battery box doors that had similar corrosion.

To me it looks like dried on polishing compound or maybe Walbernize.
That vertical piece that covers the hinge screws is plastic, same material as the lower belt line. There is no way it corroded to look like that. (this stuf http://odmrv.com/catalog/index.php?m...roducts_id=572 )
I would try scraping it gently. Then use a cloth polishing wheel.

'Inkadinkely' everyone;
While this will will not prevent the problem as shown in the photo, remember that hinges are aluminum, and the hinge pin is steel. (May be Stainless, but still steel.)
'Working' a hinge back and forth will eventually result in worn hinges. Plain Steel pins will also cause 'Galvanic Corrosion" with the Aluminum.
As my old Airforce Sgt. used to say: "If it moves, lube it! If it doesn't, paint it! If it talks back, salute it.!"
Works for me.

Exact same hinge issue here with our recent 25ft 2005 Intnl CCD. Previous owner stored near so cal ocean. Addressing as much as possible and item by item. Masked off With a soft wire wheel blew most all corrosion away then with smaller soft wheel the insides and burnished with finer paper using a dremel triangular vibrating tool. Then some strong clear coat spray. Click image for larger version

The lesson for all of us is that we MUST inspect the rivets, tail lights, panel cut lines and hinges every month to search for filiform corrosion. If any is detected, clean and treat with Corrosion X or ACF 50. Treat all these at least annually (more frequently in moist, humid or salty climates) to prevent corrosion from starting.

It takes less than an hour to do this, but it's really important.
