Clearance Lights

Is there any rhyme or reason to when and where Airstream put clearance lights? I've got a '64 Safari that has clearance lights halfway up and near the top front and rear on both sides, but none on the front or rear. I've seen newer and older Airstreams with more and less lights in the same and different places. Does anyone know the story behind the clearance lights?

Clearance light requirements are based on trailer length, height, and width. See National Highway Transportation Safety Administration table at: Trailer Poster Table for Website

Since Airstreams may be sold in any state, they are undoubtedly manufactured to meet Federal minimums, but not necessarily any state requirements that happen to exceed Federal minimums.

That was a buyer option back then.

They are easily added as the wire is already there.
