Mike,

What baffles me is the plate is the FIRST and ONLY plate that has ever been on the trailer. If the CA DMV couldn't verify that, WHO could ?

Mark, maybe it can be explained by the fact it is over 40 years old and with the computer age a lot of the old records were not entered into the system. As time goes by,the employees only know how to obtain info if it is in 'the system' already.
This is an unlikely explanation and probably incorrect but I've seen stranger things.

the black 63 plate is problematic as many want to refit them to 60s CA car
restorations .The key is to not give the DMV any more than they need to see
on your coach. My 60 has a new plate ,soon to be replaced with a yellow 56 plate and sticker,The CA highway patrol did the inspection ,it was from nebraska where I bought it (the trailer) the DMV did not ask nor look at the trailer .The highway patrol did the inspection ,lights etc VIN confirmation etc.
nothing said about the licencs plate one way or another .your black plate was original and legal and should have never been an attempt to seize it .im glad
you fought it .

S C Streame, thanks for the information and persistence. I think I'll give a try to an original plate on my 55 FC when the time comes. When we licensed the Bambi we had a local city policeman come out and do the inspection. It went well and was a good visit. Several has said keep the visit with the DMV as limited as possible. I think that's the secret.

Hi Nor Cal, Here is something the old car guys have been doing for awhile. They get a personalized plate for there car and have it painted black and yellow by a plate restorer. Not legal but not one person I have talked to has had a problem. The feeling is you'd have to be doing something really bad or have a major jerk to hassle you for it. I know that's the route I'm going on my 63 K10 truck, I want a stock looking personalized plate.
