Try looking in the tongue area on the Aframe.

There should be a plate forward of the door.
But, different years have different places.

OK, attendant checked tongue a-frame and didn't find any 8 character codes. Just one 7 character code. 2 six digit #s seperated by one letter (000x000). The airstream web site lists some 7 character codes in the 60's catagory, though none match. Of the #s listed none have an "A" in the code. I'm stumped.

Is the trailer a 1968?
Shawn, If the trailer is a '68 there should be a model/manyfacturer plate just to the right (forward) of the main entry door. It will have the model name displayed and the serial number should be die stamped into a recessed area of the plate. Hope this helps. Ed

I am trying to get my 1968 registered in California coming from New Mexico. I have the plate by the door with 1308J733, which is what is on the title.
However, California requires two locations. I have scraped most of the paint off the top of the a frame, removed the equalizer mounts, etc. and found nothing. Even tried looking under the propane tanks. On the road side, there is a large number shown that doesn't seem to relate to anything. I looked under and around almost any other logical locations and still nothing.
Should I just give up? Am I looking for something that doesn't' exist?? DMV wants two locations or I think they assign a new VIN.
Thanks for any advice on this.

Our 68 Ambassador is registered in CA with one VIN location......we found our local DMV to be clueless.....We found that different DMVs have different rules and charges....go figure. We found Thousand Oaks to be okay. They verified our 69 Overlander from Arizona...did not ask for 2 locations..and they are a California DMV....also, you don't want a different vin....yours tells the length (I think-is it 30 '?), the year 8 for 68, J for Jackson Center and #733 off the line.....paula

You might try taking them a close-up of the ID plate....

They will have a CHP officer come by and check the plate (shown). The problem is if they require two numbers to be on the trailer.
I can only find one.

Don't even mention two locations.....
You just need one location.....someone has some misinformation....I was worried about our 82 24' MH that had a 15 digit VIN from Florida....before that only a 15 digit VINs were necessary in CA....not a problem....I worried needlessly for 2 weeks.....

Are you sure it is an Overlander?
How long is it including the hitch?

Get your self a piece of flat stock aluminum about 1 1/2" x 3". Write down the VIN number on a sheet of paper. Take the aluminum plate and the paper to a jeweler and have the plate engraved with the VIN #,s.
Take it home, paint it, wait two or three days, sand some of the paint off, scrub it with a scotch brite pad. Pop rivet the plate to the tongue somewhere inconspicuous. Now you have a VIN # in 2 locations. Next step; call the CHP.

You have a Sovereign not an Overlander
30' makes sense now.....Overlanders were under 26', Ambassadors were 28' and Sovereigns were 30'...it says on your face plate.....they are all Land Yachts of that year..
