The generator and reserve 1# propane bottle connection are complete, so a quick repair to the door latch. According to folks here on the Forum, the '66 through '68 trailers (with the "vault doors") have an extra long latch bolt on the Bargman door know set. The set is no longer manufactured, but we were able to find a replacement long bolt. The new one is machined from an aluminum billet vs cast from some alloy. It went together well and is operating smoothly.

We also added a detail for the screen door. We picked it up a few months ago with plans to add it to the door.

We had a question about the generator box manufacturer. They are in Indiana and can be found at "rvgeneratorbox.com".

A quick update, we added LED lights in the overhead compartments and wardrobes. Used lighting from a local auto parts store. They're made for installation in the bed of a pickup truck. We wired each set through a switch with an LED indicator, so it's obvious when we leave them on when the cabinets doors are closed.

We also found a package of small (2" diameter) battery lights. They're made for sticking under cabinets, etc and use 3 AAA batteries. They light white, red, green, or blue and are controlled with a small remote control. We occasionally camp at a dark sky preserve and these will be perfect for the restrictions on white lights. We can easily use them on red.

Happy Halloween!

Well the '64 is winterized and we're getting down to one more trip for the '68 before winter. Lady R stopped by this evening for the Halloween festivities in her pink flamingo costume. Couldn't resist a couple photos in the fading light with her and the Airstreams...

Just another quick update. I worked with Shacksman as he replaced the left street side rear corner panel in November. It was damaged by the PO and re-damaged by me coming through customs in October. He did a great job and I learned a lot.

Lady R visited yesterday and went for a slide in a L.L. Bean sled we picked up on our last fall trip through New England. We stopped at L.L. Bean but, we bought the sled in Woodstock, N.Y. from the church flea market for $8. A few hours of sanding and a few coats of poly and it was ready for this maiden voyage across the front yard. Lady R (wearing her Canada sweater from our November trip), as usual, is fully in charge.

Happy Holidays!

Lady R stopped by today for another sled ride on the new snow. She checked out the polishing progress we've made due to some nice weather. Of course the snow is hiding much of the work.

Just a quick update. We've added some LED strip lighting inside that run on 110V AC. The controller allows dimming the lights, as well as strobe, flash and slow dim/brighten, although we're not sure when we'd use those features. The lights also let you choose light color from about 12 different choices. Red may be useful if we're camping at a dark sky preserve.

We also purchased a new pickup truck in December to share some of the towing with the Expedition and have added a couple of items based on discussions here. We installed a front hitch receiver and mounted our bike rack on it. We also made a simple truck bed slide to make it a bit easier to load and unload camping items. We added running boards to the cab and side boards to the bed then custom made a hinged toneau cover to top it off.

Added a screen and "draft dam" to the refrigerator vent. I read a post today about replacing the small shield between the Air Conditioner and the refrigerator vent. I replaced the plumbing vent screens and put this on the fridge vent cover in April to reduce the wasp and hornet nesting (and the occasional bird nest), but thought the design might also reduce the draft effect from the new AC unit. I hadn't considered the AC exhaust might affect the fridge until now. I've tested the fridge in all 3 modes of operation and it functions perfectly (no difference before to after). I'll make a point to test it with the AC running this weekend.

I thought I'd also add that we decided on a new name for the Airstream. "Serendipity" The name fits for us because that's how we like to travel with her. We kind of pick a destination and a trip duration and tumble in that direction. No reservations, except for potentially later that day. If we like a place we stay, if not we move on. Headed for Nova Scotia a year ago and never made it past Acadia (one more night at a time).

Another quick update. We installed a FanTastic fan in the rear vent this week. The replacement was straight-forward, so just a couple of photos.

Somewhere in the past, the fans were replaced with just new vents and the rear vent control arm broke, so a replacement was in order. I searched and reviewed the posts here on the forums and decided on a Maxx because you can run them when it's raining. Fortunately, before I ordered the new fan, I stumbled across the FanTastic I had ordered over a year ago. Usually, it goes the other way, I order something before I find the previous one.

Thanks to the Sealant Thread - used Sikaflex 221 as recommended.

There's a possibility we may be camping in the Between the Lakes area later this year and the name made me think, flying insects may be a consideration. So I pulled out an EZ Up screen I purchased a few years ago in an end of season clearance at a local sporting good store and cobbled together a screen room for our ZipDee awning. I didn't invest much, $29 for the screen, $30 for some rip-stop nylon, 50' of parachute cord and an afternoon measuring and sewing. It falls in the category of "not good, but good enough". The bugs probably can't tell the difference...

Any photos of the bug scene install from the inside looking out. Specifically of the way you attached the top of the screen to the awning. Thanks

Tsunami-v2,

I went through the photos I took and didn't capture the install detail you're looking for. We hope to get out this weekend and use the screen, so I post a few photos early next week.

The attachment is as simple as I could make it, however. I sewed a sleeve at the top of each triangular side top piece and several sleeves across the front of the screen. I permanently ran paracord (1/4 inch nylon) through the sleeves. It is long enough to completely encompass the whole screen length and across the trailer side where there is no screen. The cord attaches to the four corners. Installation is; 1. dump the screen on the floor mat, 2. pick up the right front trailer corner and attach it to the awning rail on the front curb side of the trailer (the awning rail has about two inches left past the awning front and back) with a loop around a 3/8 inch bolt slid into the awning rail. 3. attach the left rear screen corner the same way to the rear curb side awning rail. 4. stretch and tie (I think I'll add a little clip) the cord across the top of the trailer to hold the trailer corners tight. 5.stretch the screen to each awning corner and attach the corner cord loop to the awning arms with a small bungee cord. 6. stake the screen bottom as possible.

Hope this helps until we can get some photos, thanks for your interest,

Roy and Marie

T-v2,

Here are some photos of the attachment. I am still considering adding a few Velcro strips to the front awning (facia? - whatever you call the hanging down part) to line up with the velcro on the screen. I'm just not sure I want to alter the actual awning fabric.

The first photo is the front curb side awning rail, the second is the tightening of the rope running along the Airstream, the third is the bungee for the rear corner (the ball on the bungee fits well in the locking wheel notch, and the fourth photo is the sleeve along the front of the screen, from inside.

Hope this helps,

Roy and Marie

What toilet did you end up using?

I have this same bath setup with the box behind the toilet and am having trouble find the right toilet.

Thanks

We're moving aft to the bathroom. Lady R is closely inspecting the floor vent. Just over her head is the bathroom closet. It's relatively large and houses the new 6 gal Atwood water heater at floor level. As we restored the trailer, I spent a full two days chasing leaks in the original copper plumbing. I gave up and in a few hours removed all the old plumbing and replaced it with PEX. I added a manifold for draining the water heater as an upgrade over the work we did on the '64. We haven't had a problem winterizing the '64, but this should cut the time down.

Inside the closet, we made room for a soft-sided laundry basket. Our bathtub in the '64 seems to become the catch-all for bottles of drinking water and our hamper. We hope to reduce that with the '68. The drinking water jugs have a specific storage area under the sink. Above the basket is the towel shelf and above that another small shelf. We added a small basket there, but haven't filled it yet.

Behind the new toilet, we removed the plastic coated "(original) hamper" cover and replaced it with some woodgrain with a hummingbird wood burning. We capped off the sprayer for the toilet, thinking that the shower sprayer is very close and we added a sprayer faucet at the sink that also reaches the toilet. The new toilet also appears to flush significantly better than the toilet in the '64.

The shower curtain rod was inspired by Aluminumium. He solved the problem of the bizarre plastic covered cardboard room divider thing that Airstream provided. His installation is much stronger than ours. He can hang his bicycles or probably anything else he chooses from his. We thought for awhile on how to take his design and avoid mounting it to the plastic end cap. So we tied into the pocket door bulkhead at 90 degrees, followed the tub contour, then followed the end cap contour down the the top of the '(original) hamper." We finished the open gap behind the toilet (above the hamper) with Lexan cut to shape and sealed along the end cap. We did not seal the bottom edge, to allow for the originally intended drainage path. Shampoo, etc. can sit on the shelf and be seen and easily reached from the shower enclosure. I also wimped out on the material for the rod. Since, this was my first attempt at bending tubing, I opted for conduit. Much less expensive and a bit more forgiving. If we get too much oxidation over time, I'll replace it with marine stainless steel tubing. Thanks again for the guidance and inspiration by Aluminuminum.

revdrslim,
Thanks for the interest in our project. It has been a while since we've updated this thread, so I'll try to add some photos from our western trip last August and September within the next week or so.

The toilet is a Dometic 320 Gravity.. It's dimensions are 19" long X 15" wide X 17 " high at the rim. I think there may be two sizes available now, but at the time I think there may have been only one size for this model. We're pleased with the function and installation. We did not alter any original positioning of the tank or drain connection.

Thanks for the reminder that this thread is out there,
Stay safe and healthy,
Roy and Marie
