Long time not post.
Well there has been a lot of thinking and debating and nashing of teeth. Also a little knotting of the stomach. Then came the decision!
I have been blessed with a gift. A very special gift..... I have been given a 1994 diesel Suburban. WOW!! A diesel sub!!!! With this gift comes great responsibility.
I feel like I am cheating, but I am going to have a shop (to be named when the details are hammered down) replace the floor in the 68 for me. I feel that this is what has been really holding me back on this project. I just do not have the time and skill to do this critical part of the job right. While the trailer is in the shop, I will work on getting new axles for it to install once I get it back.
As soon as I take possession of my new "toy" (the sub), I will start the ball rolling. BTW my father has offered to help with the funding of the floor/axle work. I love my dad!!!!

Tedd,
Congrats on the Suburban! How many miles are on it?
I don't think there is any such thing as cheating on your side when getting some work done.
Pick a good shop and there won't be any from that side either.

The PO (bought it new) gave me a list of the work he has done to it with the mileage each job was done. The last entry was "Oil change 178,108" on 11/28/09.

Way to go Ted!! The kids are getting a little big to cram in the rear jumpseat.
As always, if you need any info or parts for the TW give us a holler.

Time to revive an old thread......
I pulled the 68 out of storage on Saturday and labored today.....
First order of business was to clean the old girl up. This is the first time I have ever washed an Airstream. Used an "O Cedar" floor polishing tool. WOW did it do wonders! Also started to repaint the trim. Got to keep her looking good for the neighbors.
Then on to cleaning the interior. Found that spic and span with a scrub brush did the trick. You can see the three stages of the cleaning method.
First a rag to wipe down and get the heavy stuff off then to the brush.
I need to replace the floor. First clean, clean, clean.....

Hi,
I've been looking at your pictures and blog.
Has the floor been replaced in the 68?
What ever happened to the smashed 67?
Isn't all this fun?

Greg,
Big fun....well maybe just fun. Right now it is a little frustrating. But, one step at a time.
The 1967 has started to come apart at the seams. I just can not keep up with the rate of decay anymore. I believe that the frame has let go just behind the axles.
I pulled the 68 out of storage and have started a new on the floor. The cash flow is not real happy, but the wife is. I have a dead line for getting the floor in to camp "a-la tin tent" by the second weekend of October. Dead lines help. LOL

OK Update
I have elevator bolts and I have the rivets to re-install the interior skins. Also have the insulation for the walls. 5 of 7 windows are rebuilt with new gaskets. Steel is at the shop. I just ran out of money for the plywood..........

The big day is tomorrow!
Well I have come down off the wall about floor thickness.
I have six sheets of 3/4 BC Exterior and one sheet of 5/8 for the spacers.
The floor goes in tomorrow.
Today was a big day for getting ready. I had new wheel wells made up (some assembly required). They are ready for installation. New back up lights, license plate light and filler plate (below the back window) were installed.
The biggest part had to be removing most of the floor!! I hate spray foam insulation. The stuff makes a huge mess. I feel sorry for all of the other 1968 owners that have to go through this.

Oh I forgot to mention that I had some new steel welded in. The stringers (for lack of the correct term) were rotted out. After taking numerous measurements of the 2" wide rusted stuff I came up with 13 gauge as the correct thickness. 3 hours of prep, 1 hour of welding. Thank you to the machine shop where I work!!!! Thanks Rich.

Pecatonica here we come. Looking forward to the NEW YOU; God I'm going to miss looking at all that duck tape.
Is Lori and the kids surviving all this? We will just have to have some "camp coffee" and apple cider to celebrate.
See you in 3 weeks.

Lori has been a real trooper through this. She has done so much work scrubbing the interior panels and doing a lot of prep work for me.

Tom,
A big thank you for all of your help and guidance yesterday. I would have not gotten so much done with out you.
4 out of 6 floor sheets are installed. 2 left, 1 easy and 1 that will be a challenge, but Tom left me with a good plan and the tools to pull it off.

The plan is to put in two Pullman style bunks over the mid-twins. Other than that it will be close to original being a '67 interior in a '68 shell. LOL
