Introduction Newbie 1968 Airstream International Overlander

Hi everyone, I just picked up this beauty and had some question regarding how many feet of window stripping I need to replace all the seals. I don't have calipers but maybe someone can answer if the glass was 1/8" or 3/32" so I can order clips, I will measure to make sure I order the right ones though. last question cabinet latches and white cabinet latches available? and does anyone make the trim that goes on the body I think it is blue in photos and it's a rectangle. Thank you in advance! I'm sure I will be asking a lot of questions in the future.

Beauty!

We just had a '68 Safari follow us home. Last week I replaced all of the window seals.
You can get it at Vintage Trailer Supply.

The cabinet latches are available from Inland RV
White
Brown

As I understand (and I'm new too so I could be wrong) some glass has metal trim, some does not. Mine has both. The window to the right of the door has metal as does the kitchen but the others windows do not. I ordered both size clips from VTS to see which would fit best.

I used a plastic scraper to remove the old window gasket and CRC Gasket remover (on one window with a different type of old gasket I used brake cleaner as the old adhesive was a little stubborn). I used my Dremel with these 'buffs' that are like Scotchbrite pad material, to clean up the aluminum and then wiped the surface down with rubbing alcohol before applying 3M Weatherstripping adhesive and the weather stripping.

Let me know if you want photos.

Oh, I forgot to say that all of the latches in our rig are brown and some were faded so while applying 'Restor-A-Finish' to the wood, I thought I'd see what would happen if I put some on the latches. It helped a lot and now I don't think I'll replace them as they look much better, though not perfect.

What a nice trailer - enjoy! My 69 needs the seals replaced on windows and roof vents but I just have not gotten around to it.

How many feet of seal "stuff" did you use? We are getting ready to start that as well.

Thanks

I used between 37 and 39 feet for my 6 windows. I ordered a roll of both sizes from VTS but only ended up using the portion from the 50' roll. I'll hang on to the other for future use.
I think my Safari uses a different kind than the 1970's.

Very nice 68, I'm just a little partial to them myself!!

If the glass is original it should be 1/8 but check to be sure. I put a little dab of clear silicone inside the bottom of each clip to help keep them in place. If a new clip is too loose, take it off the glass and give it a gentle squeeze with pliers and slide it back on the glass. Ditto the dremel with scotchbrite buffs for getting the adhesive residue off the window frame, by far the best and fastest method I found to clean the frame. Some places suggest using weather strip adhesive on the new gaskets. I just cleaned the frame really well, wiped with acetone or lacquer thinner and then applied my new gaskets using just the peel and stick adhesive on them. No problems in 7 years. Do take time when you miter the bottom corners and get the fit perfect or it can be a spot for a leak (sure don't need to create any as the old 68's have plenty of leaks on their own-ha). I used new single edge razor blades cutting straight down on a piece of wood to make the miters. That method gave me the cleanest cut and the tightest fit. Put a very little dab of black windshield silicone in the joint and it will be good to go and never leak.

Thanks for the information! How do I order from Inland RV? I assume I have to call in my order? can't just click and check out. I'm in Canada so the dollar is going to hurt me and shipping.

I believe you will have to call or fill in their 'Contact Us' form on their web site.

I gave them a call ordered 4 latches... Ouch with the conversion and shipping to Canada was a bit pricey, but I will have complete latches. Ordered the clips and 50' of seal I should be good to go. Thanks!!!

They're spendy that's for sure. That's why I decided to live with my faded latches. They do look a bit better with the wood treatment on them. Good enough to leave them for now while I tackle more expensive repairs.

I spent today installing all new screen material and a mini blind in the galley. I ordered the screen spline from Vintage Trailer supply but it was the wrong size for my screens so I took a chance at our tiny little town hardware store and found the correct size. Go figure!

Thanks to Aluminuminum for his idea of the miniblinds. I love the new look. Very clean.

We haven't had our girl on the road since I installed them but you can read more on them on Aluminuminum's thread.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f454...nt-111812.html

I understand his are attached to the screen with screws, AirstreamPDX attached his with 3M tape and I used velcro tape with 10# test.

Photos of AirstreamPDX's install can be found here - this is not my idea, I'm simply standing on the shoulders of creative Airstreamers before me.

Chaos,

Welcome to the forums. We're just finishing our 68 Overlander (not that you ever really finish). Ours is a twin (26T) from California, so a little different floor plan than yours. We've spent about 20 nights in ours so far and hope you enjoy yours as much as we are enjoying ours.

If interested, there are some more details at "The Shiney Reveal 1968 Overlander". I still haven't figured out how to use a direct link to the thread... I'll try this:
