Would like recommendations/ advice for RV parks in San Felipe area from someone who has been there recently.

It's been about a year and a half but things don't change much there except the prices.
There's a magnificent boondocking beach south of town about 20 miles called Punta Estrella but price is now up to $35/ night. Basic facilities and dump station. Check my photo album for some shots.
There are numerous RV campo facilities both north and south of town so you can start at Sam's (few miles north) and work your way down. There are a couple S. of town for about $15.
Punta Estrella is trying , as are many, to sell lots. They own Valley of the Giants further south where the big Suhuaro cactus live- worth a trip, but prepare to air down if you get stuck in the sand!

Our favorite spot is all condos now. We have stayed with Murray and others at Punta Estrella and enjoyed it very much. We were by there a couple of months ago and they were still open for RVs. If you go to sanfelipe.com and check the section: Hotels, condos, and places to stay, they have several RV parks listed. Unfortunately, we have not stayed in any of them. Ron

we were there last winter and it is expensive,cold and not very clean the beach is littered with garbage and it is not very nice overall

We have a home down there and have found all the beaches we have been to to be much cleaner than California beaches.
The winter weather somewhat mirrors LA weather temperature wise with much less rain.
The only expensive places we have been are owned and run by people from north of the border. You can get fresh fillet mignon for about five dollars a pound and get fresh fish daily from the fishing boats.
...and to contradict the State Dept there are no drug wars in San Felipe and there has not been a single case of swine flu.

the place right next to our house has boon docking on the beach for l$15 a night with a restaurant and bar 100 feet away. It is a slightly busier beach (that is you will see maybe 10 people) as opposed to the one south of town where you are it.
If you have some time come on down and visit, we will take you to our favorite local spots.

Debbie, I'm from SoCal originally and we are just about to get a new AS. Bajaa has been on our list of must-go places. But with all the recent news stories of kidnappings & murders as far North as TJ, I'm pretty reluctant to head SOB (South of the border.) And my wife is flat against it. ANything to assuage our concerns?

The problems that you have read about are on the west coast of baja.
San Felipe is on the east coast, Sea of Cortez side.
We have been camping there for years and have had no problems.
We like it so much, we built a home there.
We go through Calexico, into Mexicali.
120 miles later, we are in heaven.

Sounds like you are definitely getting the max out of Mex. If I can convince mi esposa, we'll try it this February, leaving from La Quinta, CA. How long's it take to reach San Felipe from Mexicali? I've been reading other threads, sounds like insurance is doable thru someone like Vagabundos.

Camped many years ago on the West coast of Baja with my family. Have never been to San Felipe area or Puerto Penasco across the gulf.
We'll keep on eye on this trip, safety in numbers.

They have been doing a lot of upgrades on the road from Mexicali to San Felipe. Here is a link that talks about road conditions.

Road conditions for the trip to San Felipe

It sounds like the toll road from Tecate to south of Mexicali would work for you. It usually takes 20-30 minutes to get thru Mexicali, the toll road bypasses that. If you cross at Mexicali it is usually 2.5 hours to get to San Felipe. The speed limit is 80 km/hr on most of the road down to SF but most cars go 70-80 mph. I have never seen anyone with radar but signs do warn you about it.

Did someone say caravan? been wanting to visit Ron & Debbie for awhile now and Feb. looks good for us and my wife being born in Argentina the language is no problema.

Hi Ron and Deb, It sounds if you folks are really living the Airstream dream. It would be great to hear more about your life in Mexico. What is the cost of daily stuff and did you learn the language or is that a necessity? How are you accepted? What is the weather like? What was it like to buy a home? Are the utilities about the same as the states? How often do you have to return to the states to keep your citizenship? You have a wealth of knowledge about a place most folks would love to go but are having a hard time with all the news stories. You are there what is it really like. You guys can make our day…Airperson
