The Boomerang Is Back!

Good news for retro trailer interiors!

The Boomerang Is Back

Edited by Liz Seymour
Washington Post Staff Writer

It's been a tough few years for Formica.

Known for decades as the kitchen and bath countertop of choice for millions of homeowners, the reliable laminate has been pushed from its perch, first by Corian and other solid-surfacing materials, and more recently by granite, marble and other natural surfaces.

The National Kitchen and Bath Association recently reported that laminate continues to be the most popular material for kitchen countertops, but it's dropped in popularity. In 1997, 72 percent of remodeled kitchens had laminate tops. In 2002, that figure fell to 50 percent.

Formica's retro styles, revived from the 1950s: "Boomerang" and "VirrVarr."

But Formica is fighting back.

On May 2, the company will reintroduce two of its original patterns sure to send plenty of baby boomers down memory lane: "Boomerang," with iconic curved patterns floating against a blue, aqua, coral or charcoal background, first came out in 1950. "VirrVarr," with a spider-webbish design in light blue or white, was created in 1958.

Renee Hytry, the senior vice president of global design at Formica, said that today's public got a glimpse of the company's earliest designs in promotions celebrating Formica's 75th anniversary in 1988. Architects, designers and mid-century enthusiasts kept calling for the older patterns to be re-issued. Focus groups and market testing confirmed consumer interest, Hytry said.

The patterns will be available wherever Formica is sold, including kitchen and bath showrooms, Home Depot and Lowe's.

I didn't redo the Caravel's countertop because I couldn't find a boomerang pattern I liked. Hmmm, might just have to make that mod now! Thanks for the heads-up!

Swung by the kitchen dept at Home Depot this weekend to check out the new retro formicas--and the lady threw a set of samples at me and made a phone call. When I couldn't find the boomerang or virr var patterns, she told her friend to hang on, shot me an annoyed glance, and told me to call 1-800-FORMICA for samples.

The sample lady at Formica was extremely pleasant. She said the release was delayed. The product will be officially released next week, but actual production won't be available until 6/6. They will send samples--and nice big ones--if you request it, though they won't come until next month.

Also, found out at Home Depot (from the other salesperson, who took pity on me after the first one was so rude) that while they don't like to sell the shiny stuff (it scratches easily), they will special order it in any pattern for a slight fee. It still works out as pretty inexpensive.

Cool, I got on the waiting list for samples too. Aqua and Coral. Can't wait to see them in person!

Thumbs down Worth the wait

Now I know why part of our countertops were destroyed. So I could replace ALL the countertops so they match. Guess I'll throw that "Seaspray" aqua sample away. I just thought "Seaspray" was so appropriate for Moby.

I got my samples!

The samples arrived last night, just as Rick and I were heading out for dinner!

I am really, really impressed with the design quality--the design is crisp and solid (I've seen knock-off versions that weren't so good). The samples are also on the (recommended) matte finish. It actually doesn't look bad--and for the benefit of durability, I'm exceptionally tempted...

We made our decision quickly, since the perfect design just jumped out at both of us. To our surprise, it's the VirrVarr Light Blue, the sample that is the top one in the photo from the Washington Post article. It's got tan lines over a background that is barely blue--more of what I would consider a blue tinged white. It will look fantastic in our Eames-inspired interior (and look much better than the fake wood formica that is there now). We're going to try to order it soon--Rick has a feeling that while the boomerang may be around for a while, the VirrVarr may be a limited release.

So, now I still have to figure out--shiny or matte!

Mary
