Thanks Mouth, glad it worked out for you. I got a bunch of fabric samples there the other day (without my wife) when i got my foam cut, so hopefully we can agree on one soon so i can finish my reupholstery job. Nice work on the Argosy too! I'm in the middle of a 73' Sovereign that i found and am redoing, and having a great time. Pics to come soon..........eric

Mouth,
Do you know if they have a website? Did you pick your order up or are they shipping it? I need a couple of new mattresses and some cushions if we are going to build a gaucho.
86scotty,
Did you notice if they carry awning fabric? We would like to sew a new rope and pole awning and would like to find some good cheap Sunbrella fabric.
Any assistance would be appreciated!
Thanks,
63silver

63silver we went into the shop last friday and brought in our template for the matress that I needed and was cut right there for no extra cost.....this literally saved me over half of the price even with the free shipping that on line would have been...since we are so close this is too good to pass up. They did have alot of fabric but dont think that I seen anything that you could use for awning. This is a mom and pop shop that has been open for over 50 years....I much rather use this type of business than going to a "big box" type of store. They will cut any type of foam for you....they really have all shapes and size. If you need anything else about them let me know. Also a fyi.....they have some marine grade vinyl that would be really good on table cushions. I don't know if they have a website (really don't think so) but I just called the number that Scotty had listed they are open mon-sat.

Yep Mouth, a good deal for the HD50 i'm suspecting you got. I got both twin beds and all of the gaucho pieces cut with the regular stuff for just over 200. I don't know if they do much shipping, but you could call and ask. I'm not sure how they would cut irregular shapes and ship, they have several signs posted saying no refunds, all sales final, etc.
They did let me in on a little upholstery secret though. Use an electric kitchen knife to cut and shape your foam. I plan to do this to get my rounded gaucho piece right.
good luck!

Wait for a sale!
Hancock Fabrics is having a sale 40% off, includes special orders too. Foam is expensive as you well know so I tripped across this sale today in our area of East Texas. Hopefully you have a Hancock Fabric or another national chain...if not wait for a sale, ask the manager when they expect it to go on sale. I am tired of looking for replacement foam for twin mattresses so I'm going this way as opposed to mail order.

Damn, wish I'd seen all these posts earlier!
But I think the deal I got at Wally World is acceptable, a 60x80 foam mattress that's 3" of memory foam and 5" of firm regular foam for $240. I'm cutting that down to 48x76 for a double bed width and queen length.
If your bed is symmetrical (some of mine aren't), you can use the memory foam side in the summer and the firm foam side in the winter. Memory foam gets pretty hard when it cool in the Airstream (but is suprisingly comfortable once you're on it and things warm up, just a few minutes).

Gaucho Foam
I redid the 2 gauchos in my 71. One has a pretty dense heavy foam. the heavy foam backrest tends to slump under it's own weight while the lighter foam does not.

Hi Eric,
The futon matresses tend to be too high when in the sitting position, but a few have used them & don't mind as a temporary solution. I've found that just the regular gaucho works fine with a tight fitted futon cover tho, if you want to buy the foam & not upholster it. Walmart has a lycra (or something similar) based taupe fabric that is the perfect length, nice & taught. The width is too long, but just fold it over the back & no one has to know. It has stayed put for us through many trips out. Keep in mind, there are limited color options on this & it needs to be the stretchy kind. I also bought a cotton one from Target & put it in the back "room" because I don't like the loose fit as much, looks sloppy & it's obvious it's not custom. It still works though. This is a great (& QUICK) $30 fix.
Hope that helps,
Brooke

Tim, How thick would you recommend for the side mattress of an Argosy? Lux or HD 36?. Is 73X34 the size I would need. Our camper is on a site 4 1/2 hours away so I can't measure it. Thanks

The Oats, I can't tell you what the size would be for the side bed in your Argosy because I have a Tradewind and don't know if they would be the same size. Also, I re-fabricated my side bed and so I don't think it is comparable any more. But the length I ended up with is 76". The width was 54" when extended and we cut the foam lengthwise into two pieces. As for the thickness we used the 5" HD 36 and are real happy with it. It is our bed and we are incredibly comfortable. In fact we were both a little amazed it is so comfortable to sleep on. For the dinette up front we used the 3" Lux cause we don't plan to sleep on it and it works fine for sitting and we need as much room as we could get to fit our legs under the dinette table.
Hope that some how helps you out. Mouth012006 may have a better idea of the size since he also has an Argosy.
Good Luck,
Tim

Oats, i went with 6" standard foam on the gaucho and the bunks and really like it. They say it will break down a bit sooner than the HD36 or more expensive stuff, but it's probably what Airstream used to begin with, and that opinion was for sleeping and sitting on daily, not the occasional use a camper will get. Still, it was about 250 for the bunks and all gaucho pieces. With reupholstery on top of that, i can't see paying for memory foam or more expensive foam unless you have a specific need for it.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Tim KIm and Scotty, I think I will go with the 5" HD because our side beds get used every weekend in the summer. I think someone said somewhere, that the side mattresses were 73x34. I wish there was a place close by in Pa, but around here it seems expensive. I think I'll use the foam factory. It's a shame we can't find the original mattress type since ours is really thick and comfortable. Mouth 012006 if you read this could you tell me the size of your twin side beds?

Hello,
Does anyone have a lead on foam mattress material. I have a corner bed and will require a custom cut in order to make the foam fit properly. I have attempted to contact Knox Foam but have been advised by a local furniture dealer in Knoxville, TN. that Knox Foam has closed their doors.

Go look at the WalMart queen size foam mattress, 7" with 3" of memory foam on top. About $240. Its native size is 60x80. I cut it down to 48x76.
