Painting Walls of Bambi

I know you're probably getting sick of my questions. This is my last for a bit: I'm thinking of painting the Zolotone walls of my '62 Bambi, and using a light colored latex Martha Stewart brand paint. Is this appropriate? Inappropriate? I think I've read that Latex covers the Zolotone finish. Does anyone have any experience painting the walls? Thanks for your advice.

Yep it sticks.
My Father-in-law did it to our 59. Looks horrible but that's the baby blue and the shotty job he did. Zolotone is available so you could redo it. I personnaly would spray it so that you would not end up with brush and roller marks. The relativly inexpensive Wagner power painter have nozles that will let you paint straight up to deal with the ceiling area. Now I'm also going to be pulling out the insides on our so painting is cake with nothing but windows to deal with but If you not planning pulling stuff out then roller and brush may be the only way.

Thanks Toaster. No, it looks like it'll be brush and roller for me, but I have a couple of painter friends who are meticulous and the job will be completely professional-looking when it's done.

Thanks for the information.

If your Zolotone is in good shape I wouldn't paint over it. For resale, it's better to have as much original as possible.

But then again, if you are doing a major overhaul with all the interior componants and appliances, it won't matter.

One rule of thumb is the "uglier" the color, the better it will stick, making it even more difficult to remove later.

Aint that the truth! PO of my home painted one of the bedrooms that same ugly baby blue as my Father-in-Law painted the A/S. Three coats of paint later and the room still has a blue hue.

Shari:

I just read Andy's article about using Future Floor Wax on Zolotone. I think if the walls are in pretty good shape, I'm chucking my paint cans, brushes, and rollers and waxing the Zolotone for a nice lift. This pictures were impressive and that's all I want is a bright new lift. WHAT A GREAT IDEA!

Thanks for your input and giving my pause before a very large and unnecessary job.

Don't chuck those painting tools just yet. Andy's article describes treating "vinylclad aluminum" not Zolatone.

Zolatone is a sprayed on interior hard paint type coating.

More info can be found here:

Andy's article on restoring Vinylcald Aluminum can be found at:

Andy also mentioned it for bringing back life to Zolotone. I can't recall exactly where, I think it was somewhere here on the forum...

Incidentially, the future floor wax does a great job over Zolotone as well.

Yep. It was here.

Try a small section, and let this group know your opinion. If you don't like it, ammonia and soapy water will take it off.
