paint job

How many of you have painted the walls inside your Airstream?..just wondering, if we can redo the furniture, the appliances, the floor, why not the walls?

You can.

I painted the general walls and ceiling, two coats, in a Benjamin Moore OIL based matte-finish paint and the bath walls and ceiling with POR-15 WhiteCoat.

The Whitecoat is brilliant white and feels like porcelain.

We used a small foam roller to apply both paints over two coats of KILZ primer.

It looks very nice.

The bathroom walls in Chummy, including the shower top are painted with Tru-Valu acrylic (latex) enamel over a coat of KilzII. I love those water based products.

The walls in our FC are done in a soft white and it is not distracting but compliments the wood nicely. It was done over one coat of primer and there has been no problems. If I were to do it over I would probably shade it just a tad darker but it's okay the way it is. We looked at one a couple of years back that was done in a very bright blue to match the upholstery and carpet and I did not like it at all. We also looked at one that had been painted a light grey and it made the trailer feel very cold (my impression anyways).

Thnx for all of your feedback!..The first part of my interior decorating project is just about completed: I've decided on taupe/beige and cobalt blue colors for my comforter. The curtain/divider for the bath/galley is neutral beige/brown tones..see pix..so now all I have to do is decide on the walls!..maybe a soft white, or beige???

maybe a soft white, or beige???

Either sounds good to a partly color blind guy like me. The soft white leaves a bit more room for color changes down the road as well.

Of course I'm the guy who's wife has to dig out matching clothes for me if it's dark as I struggle to tell the difference between subtle shades if it's not under bright light.

Hi Barry,

That's ok..color is all subjective anyways

After the paint colors decided, I'll move on to the dinette area. I am going to start shoppng for the twin dinette sofa/beds cushion upholstery..not sure what colors to go for there..maybe deep green and crimson/cranberry colored pattern???

Just reading your stream. Remember you can make any color in paint, not so with upholstery fabric. I always pull all my fabrics together before deciding on paint and carpet. It makes it much easier to decide on color. You can also get samples to test on your walls. teresa

Hi Theresa,

Thnx for the suggeston: but definitely before I do the painting, the wall color will be neutral enough, and in concert w/the dinetter cushion colors..I will be sure to incorporate beige tones with the cushion covers, that will tie in with the beige/blue of the comforter

For those of you who have painted the interior, what did you use to prime spots where there was bare aluminum. On the Trade Wind we are going to paint the forward section but there are several spots where the original zolotone has even pealed away.

What about the 'sticky walls'?

I would love to paint some areas in my '74 Tradewind, but I worry about the 'sticky walls'. I am currently cleaning and using Future floor wax to seal them. How will that affect painting? Pam

I'm just getting ready to paint the front bulkhead section of my trailer (the piece above the couch in front). I've read alot in the forums about painting and will first sand it with 100 grit sandpaper (per Andy at Inland), then wipe it down with straight hot water and then use cheesecloth to get any dust particles off. Then I'm going to prime w/Kilz outdoor primer (latex 2 coats) and finally give it two coats of outdoor latex paint. I fixed the crack I had with fiberglass & bondo and now have to paint to cover all that jazz. Anyhow, I'll let you know how it comes out. As far as the Future stuff goes, I think you'll have to sand it before you paint over it. The paint will probably peel off of that because it's slippery. Wish me luck!

Yea Becky, go for it. Please keep us informed on how you make out. My concern with the Trade Wind is that will the Kilz primer stick to the bare aluminum.
