Paint

What's the best type of paint to use if I don't strip the original and just paint over it. Or is that a bad idea

What or which paint ? The paint job on the trailer? Whatever it is...if the paint is dull looking that means it is paintable, the dullness is called 'tooth' or enough roughness to grasp the new paint. Wash it and get the dust or dirt off --let dry well- real well if there is chrome stripping because water will hide out there for a while. If it's a home job the strongest paint will be oil based that you get.

Eastern South Dakota is very pretty with hills, rivers, and trees.

There are numerous threads on the subject. From what I gather a high quality paint job is difficult to tell from the clear coat and will last significantly longer.
