how do you get the bottom piece to stay in the four little clips????

Not sure what you mean by 4 little clips. We use the long pulldown at the bottom and the pegs mid-way down for a 1/2 closed option. See the examples of different ways to hold them down at Oceanair's UK website - SKYSHADE Bigshade | Oceanair
