musty carpet odour from leak

Our trailer had a leak which caused the carpet in an under-the-bed compartment to become musty. Any suggestions to get rid of the odour?

Welcome, Temporary fix-Fabreeze. Long term fix may require pulling the carpet out. You may have mold and mildew growing in and underneath the carpet.

I would definitely pull up a corner of the carpet to see what's going on underneath. This should not be a big deal since you say this is under the bed. You didn't specify the period of time that you think the leak existed. If it was a "one time thing" then I would not be too concerned, but it has been on going for awhile, you may have some issues with the wood subfloor. Best to know sooner rather than later!

Also, make sure you resolve the leak problem! No point in fixing the carpet and/or floor if the leak is still there.

I had a similar problem with an original mattress that came with our gauchos. It smelled awfully mildewy and musty. I narrowed it down to the fabric, not the foam. I tried Febreeze and vinegar to no avail. Last night I poured half a gallon of cheap vodka in a spray bottle and saturated the upholstery which is a tip I had seen on Pinterest. This morning I couldn't smell a thing. Musty or alcohol! Maybe this will work for you...

I cut the carpet out from under the under-bed storage. Why have carpet:
1) where dirty camping gear is
2) which is extra unnecessary weight
3) which traps water under it (and it is inevitable)

I replaced it with removable lightweight rubber flooring from HD. No odor, easily pulled up for cleaning and drying and probably 25 - 30#s lighter.
