Just one more thread about priming/painting

This is my first post since becoming the proud owner of a 1974 Overlander. I’m in awe of the useful information available through this forum and have been sifting through the advice for weeks. At the risk of asking yet another question about priming/painting the interior…I’m going to ask yet another question.

I’ve finally cleared everything out and I’m down to just the walls. I would like to prime then paint with a “top shelf” latex house paint. I’ve read a bunch of posts that recommended Kilz as a good primer to stick to the vinyl clad walls. What I’m wondering is if I can use the same Kilz primer to prime the plastic endcaps. Will the same product work or do I need to prime the endcaps with something like Krylon spray paint?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums!!

You shouldn't have a problem with Kilz as a primer on the endcaps. Kilz is a thick mixture that will stick to almost any surface. May take two thinner coats to cover thoroghly. In the long run, this will adhere longer than a spray paint without the adhesion qualities of the Kilz.

Wall painting.

afinpdx

Household wall paint "will not" properly adhere to the plastic end caps, or to the vinyl clad aluminum interior, unless you properly prepare the surfaces.

The vinyl walls must be cleaned and then sanded with at least a 150 grit sandpaper. They must be positively sanded, not just a scuffing.

Likewise, the plastic headliners must also be cleaned and then sanded the same way as the walls.

If you do not sand those materials correctly, in time, the household paint will simply peel off, along with the primer.

A primer coat, for longevity, is a must.

Caution. The cheaper the materials you use, the more likely they will fail, over time.

Thanks for the info Andy & Flyfshr.

I had been planning to sand the vinylclad before painting, but I didn't realize I would need to do the same for the plastic headliners.
