Great Source for Upholstery Fabrics

My wife and I acquired a beautiful 1968 CARAVEL in November that has been 95% restored. The former owner purchased all new foam for the cushions but they still need covers which is great for us as it gives the opportunity to choose our own fabric.

We looked around online and found www.newtoto.com in Toto, Indiana. Mr Marks offer a very nice selection of fabrics for all purposes including some great heavy-duty material for upholstering. The pattern we liked best was not as durable as our second choice but we liked that one very much too. It's called GREAT AMERICAN BISON. Newtoto's web site showed that they had 29 yards in stock and offers free swatches so prospective buyers can actually see and feel the fabrics under consideration.

In case you're interested this is what it looks like.

"Great American Bison" Heavy Weight Tapestry

Don't like it too much; I bought 20 yards so they only have 9 yards left which is not enough to do an entire trailer.

I spoke with Sidney Marks the owner and he said he gets many of his fabrics from the travel industry which includes companies that do uhpolstering for trailer manufacturers. Since many of these are in Elkhart Indiana he is right in the area and knows all the players so he gets some really nice stuff.

GREAT AMERICAN BISON cost $9.00 a yard which is an outstanding deal in itself but there's a sale until December 31st 2009 of 20% off so we got 20 yards for $168.65 including shipping. That should be more than enough, perhaps with enough left over for a few chair cushions for the house.

This place has a lot of nice fabrics that are very nice and the prices are really right. We priced upholstery fabric at JOANN Fabrics and most of it LISTS for $40.00 and up a yard. Even with the 50% sale they have going on right now I still would have paid $400.00 for 20 yards and I didn't find anything that even comes close to the fabric we bought from NEWTOTO for $7.20 a yard in quality and suitable pattern for our Airstream.

I'd seriously recommend Mr Marks to anyone who is in the market for uhpolstery fabrics for their Airstream or any other purpose for that matter.

This is a great source for fabrics, JoAnn Fabrics prices are at least double these.

But where do you go to buy the foam?

Knox Foam in TN has very good mould-resistant foam for cushions. But you'd better have deep pockets because they're pricey!

Another source that we found is:

http://www.foamorder.com/cushions.html

These guys ain't cheap either.

CAVEAT: I have not done business with this outfit and cannot vouch for them in any way. I offer this link merely as a resource.

If I were ordering it I'd want to get Latex but I'd probably have to mortgage the farm to do it.

Fortunately for me the Caravel's previous owner took the hit on this one. All we need to do is upholster the foam. Cost me $168 and change. My wife will be putting in the time which I think will be considerable seeing that she intends on making piping too.

Sometimes the price of peace and quiet is cheap!

Your link only goes to the main page. Was this the fabric you chose?

Swatches are here and 2 of them are winners. Couch will be covered in forest green diamond patterned upholstery fabric. Drapes for the front will be an off white tone on tone leaf print. Both of them look great with my Tommy Bahama pillow and accent fabric that I already have. Time to calculate and place an order and then to fire up the sewing machine!

UPS is hunting down my fabric.

I ordered 2 rolls and they were shipped right away. Great service from New Toto. Unfortunately, UPS put them on someone else's front porch. I'm not in a big hurry, since my lining is not here yet and I still have to get some more sliders w/ eleastic from Airstream. But it is annoying having to wait for UPS to find it.

I used New Toto for the Ultraleather/fabric for our Argosy. Great service and prices. Just had the cushions recovered - really happy with the results.

Fabric has been found!

Hubby found my fabric tonight lying in the snow by the carport. Yeah, at least we know where it is. Don't know if UPS dropped it there (that is nowhere near the front door!) or if a neighbor found it and brought it by. But I am happy to have to get started.

Tom,

Are your cushions just foam (can't tell in the picture) or is there a wood backing?

Thanks,

Ellen

Most of them have a wood backing. (I'd check to make sure, but I'm away from home right now.)

Another option. I just purchased some heavy duty uhpolstery fabric off ebay. The dealer is Moose Trading and they will send samples , which I would highly recommend doing. I have found that pictures don't capture the true image of the fabric. The good part , 10 yds for $24.99 + $15.00 S&H. They were very helpfull and easy to work with.
