Furniture

Hello, we own a 30' 1994 Excella. The sofa is uncomfortable to sit on especially on the door side. Is there a simple way to refurbish the cushions or do we need to contact a furniture store to refinish the sofa?
Regards
Brian

If you are handy with a sewing machine, you could probably make new covers yourself. Invest in some good quality foam and cover it with fabric. The previous owner of my trailer invested in really good quality foam that is about 6" thick and is very comfortable. I sleep on the front gaucho every night and am really pleased with the comfort. Check your yellow pages for foam and see if there is anyone local to you. Good luck!

Thanks Cameron for your response. Did you just lay the new cushions on top or did you take the sofa apart and install them? The door side of our sofa is sunken.
Regards
Brian

Brian, for my model year, the sofa is essentially a sliding platform on wich two cushions sit. The cushions are rectangular pieces of foam approximately 75"x34" for the seat and the backrest about 75"x14". Both cut from 6" thick foam. When the gaucho is pulled out, these cushions lie flat to make a bed. It sounds as though you may have more a problem with the structure of your sofa than a cushion problem. Are you able to remove the cushions to have a look at what is causing the sag?

There's a difference in the front sofas from 1972 to 1994. The 1972 sofa ia a big block of foam on the seat part and another big block of foam for the back that are covered like a giant pillowcase. It's more of a "mattress" than a sofa. The whole thing is removable from the sofa frame.

The 1992, is foam that is tufted and has separate pieces of foam on the seat, that are stitched in a manner to resemble a conventional sofa. The back is made in the same way. It has metal parts (like springs and a metal frame) as an integral part of the seat and back. It is not a pick up and take to the sewing machine kind of thing. It takes some upholstery skills to take the 1994 sofa apart and replace the foam, then upholster and tuft the new foam.

FWIW we had a sofa in our 1992 reupholstered for about $800 and the one in our 1975 done for $300. Both prices included the fabric.

Hope this helps.

I think I like the simplicity of my '72 better!

It sounds that an upholstery shop may be in order. Another option for you would be to remove it completely and replace it with a new Flexsteel convertible sofa designed for RV's:

Flexsteel - RV/Marine Furniture
