Front and back cap of 1974 international sovereign

What is behind these plastic caps? Does it go straight to insulation or does it go to aluminum?

on the ones I have had apart, behind the plastic end cap is insulation, then the outer aluminum shell.

These plastic caps are broken and not very attractive to begin with. What are some good ideas to do with these?

Nothing much behind them except for some insulation. As for alternative ideas, you could build a cabinet, or cover the removal area with aluminum strip segments.
