Foam mattress replacement
Hi Everybody, we're replacing the foam mattresses in our "new" '66 Trade Wind. Does anyone know of a good mattress wholesaler? Any suggestions as to firmness or type of foam for 2 twin sized beds would be greatly appreciated ad well. It looks like the current mattresses are 4"-5" thick. Thank you in advance! -Ben

We've just got a new mattress custom made to fit our trailer with the large radius corners for $535. It's made of foam and is about 9" thick. I called an airstream dealer, and apparently a new 'airstream' mattress was about $550 and about another $500 for shipping. So if you have the same experience as me you'd be better off finding a local mattress shop that can make a custom order and specify exactly what you want, and you'll get it quicker, mine only took 5 days.....

We bought a twin memory foam mattress at Ikea and took some scissors to it. Then the hot glue gun. Quite comfy, relatively inexpensive and it only took a few minutes.

Try here. Twin Foam Mattress Search Results | Overstock.com, Page 1. Free shipping right now. Use an electric carving knife to cut to right size if needed.

Lee is right - an electric carving knife does an excellent job trimming a memory foam mattress or a topper. Only suggestion is if the memory foam is packed in a compressed state, to make sure that the memory foam is allowed to expand/relax fully before making the cuts. We picked up a memory foam topper for our Airstream mattresses and it makes a huge difference.

I think I will go for a regular twin mattress and topper. Don't use them that much. $50.00 for the mattress and $22.00 for the topper is better than Over $170.00 for foam mattress. IMHO

We bought our mattresses at Ikea also. We haven't cut them up yet. We just let them hang over the edge a bit. Worked great!

We took our original Airstream spring mattress to a local mattress company, and had new foam mattress' made. (6# density) We then bought a California King memory foam topper and cut it to fit the two twins. The mattress was about $200, and the foam another $90 or so. we will never sleep directly on the mattress since the topper is on it, so they won't wear out in our lifetime. Should the memory foam start to degrade, we can just toss it and cut new ones.

Check out this thread posted by Pahaska who has converted a queen to twins and ordered custom mattresses from Rocky Mountain Mattress Co. He has also done a lot of other customization to his 2005 Classic as you will see in this thread.

I live in Butte and restored my 65 globetrotter 2 years ago. I had a local business cut new foam, using the old foam as a template. Then she reupholstered them with chenile fabric and made new curtains too. They look great. I think she charged $1900.00. That included the front dinette and the side goucho.

Hi, I went through foamfactory.com. I bought large pieces and cut them with a large bread knife. Worked well for us.

We have a 1987 25 footer with rear twin beds. I bought a king sized 8" memory foam matteress from Walmart online. I removed the cover and used the board from under the bed as a templet then I used a very sharp knife to cut the foam to shape. We are having the lady that is recovering our couch make a new cover for the wen matteress.

For those people who have memory foam mattresses -- do you also have the "foundation" (I guess this would be like box springs)? I've checked out several websites, and they seem to mention mattresses then then "foundations" are extra.
Thanks.

No box spring needed. Just some type of platform to raise it to the desired level.
