Question Custom rear bed in '79 Sovereign 31'

Hey all,
We are considering removing the night stands and turning the rear full size bed in our 31 foot 79 Soveriegn into a giant matress to sleep our family of 4. My husband is very mechanically inclined and will be doing the work with help so be creative. We would like to keep the 3 storage compartments on the hall way side of the bed and the tool storage from the exterior. We have considered using a foam matress in the middle and trying to keep storage compartments under removable upholstered cushions around the edges like the arms on the goucho. We have seen some posts that have the bed lift up and we dont want to do that. We also want to be able to change the sheets and matress in the future if needed. At this point we are looking for creative ideas and realize we will have to build a frame for whatever we decide to do. We are also aware of the weight issue and that we need to keep it light. I am looking for ideas on how to do this and photos if you have already. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I thought about doing the same thing to our 93 Excella 29'. I was wanting to built a frame that would take the place of the bedside tables so that the head end of the bed would be rounded and the foot end of the bed would still be squared off with storage drawers along it for misc stuff. But this idea would have to have a custom made mattress. I'll check back to see if someone has and idea or if I can come up with one on my own.

I have a 31' side bath and i was thinking of taking the bed and putting it across the intire back rounding off the side corners butt leaveing room in the front for walking and one night stand on the road side faceing the rear of the coach. I am also in the prosses of haveing the rare rear door option put in. One thing i would recomend is when you buy your foam buy the highest grade and have a custom bed cover made out of hospital grade neopream it keeps bed bugs out and if you spill something or your kid or pet has a accident no worries. I did this to the two twin beds in my 72 and it worked out awesome. Just look for a local mattres maker to help you.

We did this with our 1979 31' Sovereign (center bath) while renovating it but did not use the existing hardware. We used a queen mattress and built shelves on the sides and it fit well in the original space although it is hard to make that way. When we bought it, the PO had converted it to a california king which also fit but squeezed in the corners so it is possible to fit one of those as well, althought tight. Our blog has our construction of it and here is a photo:

I made three mats, the middle is a piece of wood. I can use the rear room as a twin bedroom, and also with a big kingsize bedroom. Look at the pictures.

I used hydraulic struts (like in the newer models) to hold up the base and mattress to access the storage area in my custom queen bed. They save my back and I have gained lots of storage for my off season clothes, gear and linens.

Great ideas and photos from all who have replied already.

Below is the result of a queen sleep number installed east/west in the rear of the '78.

Original twin frames were left in place and the plastic "slats" from the sleep number bed were incorporated as strengtheners across the aisle of the original twin bed frames.

More info in the link below.
