Just a quick update for the wrap-aroundphiles. I picked up all my foam today (17 pieces including 6 bunks) and put them in place. Now it's time for Mrs. Pizzachop to get busy sewing cushion covers. (The new axles and wheels are installed, it's her turn now.)
Here's a pic. (White would be an interesting color with 7 children.)
Too bad you can't fire your project manager. (just kidding, really)
Seriously, my project "advisor" would never go back to a gaucho after the wraparound. We hardly slept at all (her words, but I can't argue with her) on the gaucho, as it was too narrow and uncomfortable.
The dinette, on the other hand, has been wonderful. We had much more room and the cushions were more comfortable as well. (A mattress topper added to the experience.) Can't wait to try out this really big one.
Ron, Thanks for the progress reports, I have been watching with great interest. I am just trying to design something for my '74 TW. I love what you have done! Okay, here come the questions... where did you purchase your foam? did they cut it for you? and are the curved back pieces just pushed into that shape? Also, where do you store your table? Thanks, Pam
The foam was purchased from a local seat company just up the road. I called in the measurements and picked it up 2 days later. I had to cut the curve in the end seat cushions. I used 4" foam for both the seat cushions and seat backs (#1835 foam). I paid $260 for all the dinette plus 6 bunk mattresses (3" foam). The curved seat backs are just pushed into shape. The cushion covers are going to have to be sewed in a curved fashion to maintain the curve. (Right now, the foam is pushed into the corners from the two side pieces and without covers, it has more "grip".
The table is in two pieces (24" x 40") because of its size and weight (overall 48" x 40"). At this point, I'm not sure where it will be stowed. Most of the time, at least half of it will remain in place. It will almost fit under the bench at the very front, but I will have to work with it a bit. Down the road, I will probably make another table as this one is a bit too heavy.
interesting. I wouldn't have thought that the foam would hold the curved shape so well.
wondering about your seat/cabinet bases in the dinette. doesn't look like there's any way to access the space within.
Access to storage beneath benches is with hinged lids. (I debated between front access or top access but with top access, you have much larger openings.
Curved shaped cushions will require some coaxing from the fabric, I'm sure.
Tim, I'am looking at useing this couch in my ambassador. It's from Sears, with two recliners and a drop down table in the centre. size is 81 x 36d x 39h
I assume you're putting it across the front. So it will have to be away from the front about 16" or so. That would actually work out nicely for the recliner. I also like the drop down table in the center.
I'd like to see some inside shots of your Ambassador! (Do you have a fold away bunk? I'm looking for detailed photos and measurements so I can build one)
We're still going to need a bed. This Magic bed turns into a 76" x 51" bed when folded out.
