Byam Hooks

I've been stalking The vintage trailer supply website for months. Finally they got in the Byam hooks. I recently got them in the mail and they look great I just wanted to share with everyone.

Are these hooks used for a specific purpose or just general purpose?

Byam Hooks

The story I was told, is that they were originally sold at the AS/Byam store way back in the day. They were considered a general use Hook or called a elephant Hook, since the Hook looks like a elephant trunk. People would buy them, and then add them to places as needed.

We are going to hang 4 in the sleeping area to hang clothes lines, some in the kitchen, and possibly some in the bathroom.

It seems they are design for the bottom or soffit of an upper cabinet (or some other horizontal surface. Would seem awkward to mount on a vertical service. To me, it is a nice looing hook.

I think you can only hang a blue sweatshirt on them. Anything else will break them.

Thanks for the heads up.

What screws are you planning to use? The hole is not countersunk with a bevel, and the base looks tapered, so that a round head screw will not sit flat on the base it appears. Countersink the screw hole a bit and use oval head screws?

They are chrome-plated zinc:

https://www.vintagetrailersupply.com...-p/vts-275.htm

They are intended for vertical surfaces and the exaggerated curve is so items do not fall off while towing.

Very handy also for the bottoms of our upper cabinets IMO. Will a coffee mug handle fit onto this hook maybe, for frequently used mugs at the CG?

Thanks,

Peter

PS -- $5 each . . .

I have a bunch from sailboatstuff.com, and they have countersunk holes.

I use them for small things like rings of keys. I have larger hooks for clothing and towels.

I was thinking about using pan head/ flat stainless steel screws. Not sure on the size yet. I'll take one up to the hardware store to see what looks good.

Not sure on the strength yet. Will post more once they are in use.

When I called about them a few months ago, I was told that they are made out of cast zinc and chrome plated. Not sure how the tinsel strength compares to cast steel or aluminum.

Oval head chrome-plated screws would look cool IMO, with the new countersink done just right.

Vintage Trailer Supply has done a great job of reproducing out of production parts. I have used them a lot in the past. The hooks that I have are old stock, originally called razor strop hooks. There are a few offered on eBay for $30+.
