Love the sliding bunk idea! So creative and not visually cumbersome

Great thread. I love how the bunk beds turned out.

Has anyone considered building couches where the back of the couch rotates up to become the upper bunk? I am considering doing that so that when the camper is parked at the house when not camping, it can be a hang-out for the kids and two couches instead of two bunks makes more sense to me.

Also, silverflames, what did you end up doing for the mattresses for the bunk beds? I am considering a 4" foam mattress so that I have room for the aforementioned couch/bunk idea.

Building New Walls and Bunks

Thanks! That is a good idea using the back on the couch as the top bunk. It will really free up the space.

Right now we are using egg crate pads on the top bunks. The kids are small so it seems to be working good. The plan is to upgrade to some kind of foam mattress. I just don't have the cash yet. On the bottom we are using a twin mattress on one side, and two 3inc foam mattress on the other.

I made the ladders out of 1x2 red oak. No stain just varnish. The kids love the ladders. Up down, down up..

Looking great! We have added bunks in our last and current Airstreams, and two of them were hinged in our old set and sort of "disappeared" when not in use. We looked into making them not sofa backs and hinging down instead of up, but didn't have the vertical clearance since ours were triples in that Airstream. In our new one we did not do triples, and all bunks are fixed. We put some climbing cleats on the wall instead of ladders. For Safety guards we used removable pieces of 3-form architectural resin:

Us? Yes. Side bathroom. So all the rear bunks have curved ends.

Us? Yes, mid-bath, steetside, across from one set of bunks. You can see more pictures in our remodel thread under 86 Excella 32.

Pharm, sure will! Had there last year but missed you. We might have an open house next year, given my better half approval.
