Any pics out there of painted "fake wood" or covered it with formica?

Want to paint the fake wood of hall and wardrobe of 70 sovereign. Anybody done this that has a picture that looks decent? Anyone ever cover over this with formica like they did the top of the credenza in the diy restoration ? Need ideas. I hate it.
Most of what in the heck am I up asking this @ 2am?
Thanks!
Teena

Do you mean you want to paint it a different colour or a fake wood effect?

There's a forum member here named Driftwood, I think. He has/had a website and lots of pictures posted here about his restoration. He spray painted the entire interior white. It looked great. Haven't seen him around in a while, tho. Let me see if I can find some of it.

- Photo Gallery

That's a link to his photos here on the forums. His old website is longer around. Take a look back thru his threads started here on the forums, I think he had a thread detailing the process he went thru.

Sure wish he was still around.

Jim

I pretty much painted over all of the fake wood look in our Argosy:

Then we ripped it all out and went with a oak veneer for the matching oak cabinets...not sure if this is what you were talking about

Your looking for something additional to the link in post 7 above? I doubt there is a step by step out there - none of his old Threads seem to indicate that. The pics above give you a idea though....

Yikes! That's why i don't want to paint the cabinets...I'm thinking laminate like the pictures above. I tried a maple veneer on a few pieces but it buckles in high humidity.

Nick.

Paintings easy if you use BIN as an undercoat. I found it supplied immediate gratification as well!

Thank you for reminding me about Sneakinup's Airstream - VERY CCD'ish.

Lot's of work covering the fake wood. If anyone is thinking of removing it, check with someone who sells used office furniture. I understand there is something that will take off the old stuff fairly easily, but it's not sold in the big box hardware stores. Experimenting with ordinary solvents won't work well.

Thanks everyone for all the information. I am tossing around the idea of putting birch veneer over the faux wood and painting the vinyl covering. The cabinets that housed the sink and stove had to go. They were falling apart. We are going to rebuild with the white birch.

I had adhesion issues using maple veneer. The veneer went on well (I took the doors out, removed the vinyl panels and scuffed and reset the doors). Once reinstalled, the humidity affected every piece; even the 1 1/2" rails between the cabinets.

Now looking at laying a laminate (Formica like product) in the door frames.
