Thank you for reminding me about Sneakinup's Airstream - VERY CCD'ish.

Lot's of work covering the fake wood. If anyone is thinking of removing it, check with someone who sells used office furniture. I understand there is something that will take off the old stuff fairly easily, but it's not sold in the big box hardware stores. Experimenting with ordinary solvents won't work well.

Thanks everyone for all the information. I am tossing around the idea of putting birch veneer over the faux wood and painting the vinyl covering. The cabinets that housed the sink and stove had to go. They were falling apart. We are going to rebuild with the white birch.

I had adhesion issues using maple veneer. The veneer went on well (I took the doors out, removed the vinyl panels and scuffed and reset the doors). Once reinstalled, the humidity affected every piece; even the 1 1/2" rails between the cabinets.

Now looking at laying a laminate (Formica like product) in the door frames.
