Question 23' FB Dinette Replacement

We love our new Airstream, but we play instruments, and the dinette table setup is not very "strum-friendly"! Other than the edge of the bed (or the commode), there is nowhere else to sit and play. In addition, the dinette is over the curbside wheel well, so whoever is sitting against the wall better have very short legs.

Our thought is to remove the dinette completely and install a couch (with some small amount of storage) over the wheel well. We would use either TV tray tables or have some other type of compact/foldable table.

I think I can handle the carpentry to build a wood frame/base and have an upholstery shop make the cushions, but I would love to know if anyone out there has already done this conversion! (I'm an engineer - I copy ideas much better than I create them!).

However we end up going, I'll be sure to post before & after pics.

What you are proposing was common in 1960s Airstreams. Very few of the 1960s floorplans included dinettes; rather, there was a compact drop-leaf dining table with folding Leg-O-Matic chairs. In my travels, the compact drop-leaf table has been more useful than the dinettes in my first two RVs. The photos below are of my compact drop-leaf table in both open and closed positions:

In the photo above, both leaves are open and it provides sufficient room for four adults to dine. The table top usually matched the kitchen formica, but I asked the Fowlers to recreate my table-top in oak to coordinate with my coach's woodwork.

In the photo above, you can see how compact the table is when both leaves are lowered. Another nice thing with these little dropleaf tables is that they make excellent under the awning dining tables as well.

Good luck with your redesign!
