1966 Safari curtain rods

I am looking to replace the curtains in my 1966 22' Safari. Each window has a usual tract system along the top, but uses a rod system to hold the curtains along the bottom. Finding someone to make the curtains and finding the attachments for the top rail has not been a problem...however, my dilemma has been in finding the curtains rods for the bottom of the curtains. My trailer still has the mounting attachments for the rods in place under each window...but all the rods are gone. Anybody know where I can find replacement rods for this trailer.

Nobody has any advice? Am I wrong in assuming that because there appears to 40+ year old curtain rod hangers below each window that originally this trailer did not come with the curtain rods. I have not heard or seen any other person refer to theses curtain rods. Should there have been the usual "C" railing like on the top of the windows?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My 65 Safari did not have rods at the bottom. There was elastic cords near the bottom of the curtain that snapped to the wall and held them back. I don't know if a 66 was different. Hope this helps....Tim

Our '66 had/has a monofiliment line along the bottom. A PO changed out the curtains but the newer fabric doesn't stay in place very well. I'm just waiting to see what other replies you recieve.

Funny Ive never seen rods on the bottom of mine, the curtains I made are lined and stay close enough to the window and they are longer than the window so I have not had any issues not securing them.

Our '66 GlobeTrotter had elastic cords at the bottom of the windows. The original curtains had shrunk so I am not sure if the cord ran through the bottom hem of the curtains or not. I tried doing that with the new curtains I made (new shock cord too) but wasn't particularly impressed with the results. I may try some rings at the bottom or just let the curtains hang. Too cold to go out and experiment on them now!

Our 65 Caravel had the bungies too. It didn't work for us very well. Probably because our curtains were home made, regular type rather than the plush original style. We ended up discarding the bungie method and making a snap-on matching cloth ribbon instead. We tuck the curtain behind the ribbon and against the screen.

I too have the small hooks below all my windows and assumed the small (1/4 or 1/8th inch) adjustable rods were what was originally used to hook onto them. I have seen them available in the kitchen curtain lines (for valances) in Lowes in the past. They are just an adjustable round rod with brass looking ends with holes to hook onto the hardware below the windows. I know they were what was being used in my trailer as two of their rusty carcasses were found among the old moldy curtains we threw away when we first brought the trailer home. They were slid thru a guide pocket at the bottom of the curtain material and one was still in use behind the galley sink. I suppose the elastic bungee could also have served that purpose, but it seems to me they would be easily damaged by UV and lose their stretchability in a short period of time. Ed

OK...upon further inspection it appears as thought the lower curtain attachments are not for curtain rods but in fact for an elastic cord which was attached to the bottom of the curtains. Apparently this was the older style of holding the curtains up against the curved interior. Thanks for all y'alls help. Now for a more difficult question...How exactly was this elastic cord attached to the curtains. My guess is that is was run through the bottom hem. Where can I find a suitable replacement elastic cord and the attachment ends which fit into the existing hardware.

My 64 curtains had small white plastic rings sewn to the curtain for the elastic cord to run through. One ring every few inches.

The elastic cord has snaps on the ends that snap to wall.

I have the snaps (all four parts) for the elastic cords, be glad to send you some if you need them (JoAnnes Fabrics probably sells them).

I also need a source for the cord. I used parachute cord, it works but not quite right.

ours had cord at the bottom also. We will be going with plastic track when we get to doing the curtains in a few months. Cheap and works well.

What they used was a standard crimped eletrical connector at the end of the cord (Eye type). The cord ran through a standard curtin rod brass connector (the type when you squeeze it together it opens, allowing you to place the fabric between the "jaws" then release to hold it in place). This held the curtin close to the wall.

My 1966 Overlander had the original curtins, hooks, cords, etc... and is how it was replaced during the restore.

Try this place for elastic shock cord. Elastic, Cord & Webbing, Inc. - Elastic, Webbing, Tapes and Cords . Walter can you post a couple of pics of your curtains with the rings. I think that is a great idea.It would allow the curtain to pleat.

Thanks for the info. I too would like to see a few pics of your curtains, I'm afraid I really do not understand what you are referring to when you talk about the elastic cord running through the brass curtain rods. A picture would help tremendously.
